consistent touch Double trouble as club loses to Hill Dynes and Lawmen Consistency is generally regard ed as the mark of a good hockey club While the Newmarket Flyers are regarded in most circles as a good hockey team there are nights when the club loses games it has no business losing Such was the case Friday night as the locals dropped a decision at the hands of the host Whitby Lawmen the seventh place outfit in the Ontario Junior Hockey League standings Lawmen 7 Flyers 6 Granted the Lawmen tallied the winning goal in the final minute of play on a bad angle deflection but tha should be no excuse for a team such as the Flyers who must grab every available point in order to attain the most favorable finish in the league the playoff structure permuting the second and third place regular season finishers selection of opening round opponents while the first place team receives a bye a higher finish enables a club the lux ury of shaping its own destiny for the opening round at least visit from the North York Red Wings tomorrow night pm Community Centre and a Friday night date in Newmarket can pretty well concede positions one and two to Aurora Tigers and Travelways based on last weeks performance Even head coach Tern OBrien will admit as much It would take a major collapse on the part of one of those two teams conceded OBrien in reference to the spread in points between his side and the leaders Through Sundays action TigersJield a slim one point lead over the Travelways after a 73 loss night Travelwavs in turn are points up on the Flyers By the same token OBrien feels the club should have little difficulty in managing third spot with Dix ie struggling at this point However it will take a consistent finish to do so dont know we just havent been putting it together latelv surmised OBrien of the clubs re cent upanddown per formances The guys seem to be getting a little frustrated were getting the scoring chances but just not finishing them off Lawmen Steve Turpin had a lot to say in that matter Friday as he turned aside Flyer jshots for Whitbys second win over the Newmarket side this season outstanding praised Ken Jensen was absolutely OBrien We played reasonably well but the scores of their games lately havent been that indicative for instance an 182 loss at the previous night because he didnt play in two of their past three games and they used a Brian Mason Scott Kerr and Tony Kolic found net in a second span but Whitby got one back before the period ended and evened the count in the second after closing the gap to one goal only to see Dave the Fivers evening at Jensen with five assists to go with his goal output in the three games realizes the Flyers have been hav ing trouble putting together a string to challenge the leaders but says the club must be ready to put forth a concerted effort in order to make a run for at least third place and prepare for the playoff campaign Lately we havent been getting verv many breaks Sm JENSEN club once known as the Nationals Rays and Chubb Security and to a degree the Newmarket should provide a level to which young athletes mav aspire once their minor association days are behind them Lnforiunately such is not exactly the case and that fact could be alarming to folk interested in prolonging their playing days in Newmarket not to mention those who would like to see said teams prosper in competi tion While it nice to see that the Newmarket sporting world is involved in such levels of athletic endeavors one must wonder what happens when the current crop Of athletes becomes too old to such competi tions That is where do the replacements come from For example while it is nice to see the Glenn Verge- led fastballers ready to make a comeback how long can one expect this group to continue without the advantage of a feeder or farm system from which to draw players After all is more than that the players involved will be for the most part the same group which placed in Newmarket colors for most of the past decade and more In other words these fellas cannot expect to play forever and one day replacements will be needed if the sport is to have a lengthv future Talent Not Available Presently minor Softballs elders are 16 year olds in house league but mere in rep ball Even as probably stands when the club returns to action in the spring how many these players actually hail from the local area It is kind of admitting that the talent just is not available here and must be from elsewhere In the case ol the Newmarket Hawks baseball club a similar situation looms Although there are ongoing ef forts to promote a junior club where graduates of the Newmarket Baseball Association can skills need ed io play competitively at the senior level the best it seems the system can hope for this summer is the idea that accepting registrations for players up to 19 years of age will be the first step along a long trail At present like the Newmarket Minor Softball Association the system includes players up to the age of midget or I years and thats where the road is interrupted until the senior level a jump of say four or five years Haw efforts to field a junior team in the immediate South Simcoe Baseball League this summer were honorable vet foiled when other local centres showed no interest in playing ball The alternatives are that Newmarket could try and field a squad in a city league or develop a working agreement with one of the Toron to junior outfits The latter course woula seem most likely at this point in time Officials from Scarborough have approached the Hawks with an interest in alliance The plan would be to provide NBA players with the op portunity to develop Scarborough on a twoway street basis enabling the seniors to draw when the need arises and break the in gent ly- Envious Position Pei haps surprisingly the gridiron mav have the most envious position of the three organisations with the Region High School football program right on the doorstep and waning to be tapped It becomes a matter of whether or not the wish to tap this talent pool which although not necessarily a gold mine could provide at least a basis from which to work If not then the fate the could also be questionable beyond the current crop of players The crux of the matter is then that until such systems have been developed and the fruits can be reaped Newmarkets senior sporting representatives must go outside the local systems to compete let alone improve JANMVPIavers above the soccer age are invited to attend the workouts of the Newmarket
