it again and it must be an Ontario record For the seventh consecutive year Newmarkets municipal administration has balanced the budget and held the lines on property taxes The towns share of the property tax bill is down this year less than a dollar cents average home assessed at but the decreases over the sevenyear life of the present administration add up to a considerable saving for property owners The tax decrease since 1970 is on an average home The towns share of taxes on that home were in and in they will be Pretty good when considered with the ad ministrations record of expanding municipal facilities road improvements and other capital works including an industrial park and when compared to the tax bills being issued by other levels of local government in the area this year York Regions share of the municipal tax bill is only slightly up this year in Newmarket but the regional school boards levy is up to on an average home Over the sevenyear period the school boards increases total 4738 and regional government has cost us a 712 increase over the senior municipal government levy of And in neighboring Aurora the towns portion of a property tax bill which will come in with an increase of about 120 on an average home will be 70 Unlike many municipalities which hold taxes down today at the expense of future generations by debenturing capital im provements Newmarket has issued no deben tures for years and is continuing to stick to its cashonthebarrel policy The balanced budget has been the product of two factors sound and competent business management and a controlled growth which the administration has ensured paid its own way And it should be pointed out council balanced its budgets despite record rates of inflation during the past seven years The formula as stated by Mayor Bob Forhan and councils finance chairman Regional Councillor Ray Twinney sounds simple Give department heads firm guidelines limiting budgetary increases within their departments to six per cent then stick with them But as anybody who has run a business or kept a budget knows it just isnt that simple Every dollar in every deal is watched carefully and the subject of tough bargaining whether the deal is an agreement with a private company or a grant policy with another level of government If the dollars were counted as carefully in Toronto and Ottawa we would all have a lot more money to spend THEY SAY YOU MUST BE NEAT TO TRY FOR A JOB BUT YOU SHOULD HAVE SEEN THE GUY WHO INTERVIEWED I TRIED FOR A JOB AND WHEN I THERE THBf WHERE QUI OF By Industrial Road Richmond Hill Ontario Public response was immediate and sym pathetic Then on May on an openline radio program from Niagara Falls Ontario I was advised by the head of the French Speaking Association of Ontario that every was going be made lo suppress it across Canada In an unguarded moment this same man admitted thai his Association is funded by the Canadian Federal Government to the of three hundred thousand dollars a year In other words ihe French Speaking Association of Ontario which has its counterparts in each of our nine English speaking Provinces is virtually an extension of the Federal Government working sleadily and purposefully loward Mr now obvious goal of a French- dominated and even tually a Frenchspeaking Canada As the result of that conversation there is no In my mind that every imaginable form of pressure will be brought to bear on storeowners and managers across Canada to prevent my book getting to the Canadian public During my years in Canadas Armed Forces I firmly believed that Canada stood for freedom of speech including the right to dissent Under Mr I am no longer sure In view of the threat of suppression made against my book 1 would appreciate an opportunity to ask those Canadians who still value their personal freedom to drop into their local book stores or book WI happy with article counters to determine for freedom to dissent is as themselves whether this threatened as mine suppression been put into J V ANDREW effect If it has I would Lieutenant Commander ask that they object Retired strenuously for generosity over overdue library books have been relumed to our school resource centre A thankful librarian in York Region She was young pretty lively and had the type of hair you see In the television com mercials She was happily chatting with friends boys and girls and stood out among them The golden girl of summer One look and waff transported that fairly short distance back- to my teenage days when the summer vacation period approached and the sky was blue and the sun hot They were standing near the Softball diamond at the Newmarket Fairgrounds and they were the type of kids you would call clean cut She was the cleanest cut As I walked past 1 could overhear her con versation They were all laughing and smiling and then I told him to I she howled and they were all nearconvulsed with laughter My golden dreams of summer girls went black I was stunned and shocked I shook it off rather easily because you do hear that word an awful lot lately That and a lot of other words that we growing young boys had always felt were our own particular jargon as we dressed in locker rooms stood on the corner and worked on old cars Only men used those words And only when they were with other men Boys were expected to use them loo because they were trying to become men and that was one of the first and easiest ways to do so Those words were the daily exclusive language of truck drivers soldiers auto mechanics hockey players and as mentioned earlier young boys trying to be men Those words were sometimes found written in washrooms along with amateur drawings questionable telephone numbers and comments about people usually girls who stood accused of incredible gymnastic sex acts There was some feeling of order about all that That type of thing was in its proper place Scrawled on the washroom wall or spoken In select company only Some of the more adventurous young men that I listed among my associates dared to enter the ladles washroom in a restaurant which We frequented and reported with bated breath that the walls therein carried much of the same type of information He was a notorious liar and a sensationalist and few of us believed him Now Im not so sure Do girls talk like that when they are with other girls It seems that I hear profanity much more lately It also seems that I hear it more and more from opposite sex Call me oldfashioned or sexist but Im convinced it sounds terribly foul coming from a lady All Ihe nasty connotations ore there when a dirty word is uttered by lady Am I supposed to open the door for this attractive young thing who has a mouth like a storm trooper Some men used with great imagination A fourletter word in the mouth of a man who had been swearing for years could almost be thing of beauty As Public Relations Officer for York Centre District Womens In stitute I would like to thank the young lady for her excellent article on The Womens Institute Many people who are unaware of the work of Womens Institutes should gain a new HAY 1 would like lo m ihe Newmarket Snowmobile Club for its action In offering a reward for the apprehension of the vandals who smashed its fences Vandalism is all too prevalent in the Newmarket Aurora area at this lime of year Thoughtless minks mar public buildings tear up public gardens smash windows in schools swimming pools and damage parks and park buildings We need a return lo sterner Justice in the protection of public property Its a hard day when we must bribe our citizens lo protect iheir own property hut if thats what we must do lets do it The town should offer substantial rewards for the apprehension of vandals Im not saying string cm up frontier style arc caught but they should at least be made to pay for the repairs to the damage they have caused ami be firmly letter word as a noun adjective adverb and even to split another noun all in the same fiery sentence It would leave you gasping The recent entry into profanity on a larger scale by the opposite sex has yet to come anywhere near the mastery shown by male cussing craftsmen It just sounds crude A lady daintily sipping a drink with the baby finger extended loses all credibility with me when she reports that the government has censored the country Lithe and beautiful young girls should not wear which carry fourletter words lcat they scare away the available young men Besides this surfeit of swearing can only mean a loss in the effectiveness of a The extreme agony of hitting ones thumb with a hammer could be lessened to a considerable degree by the loud and heartfelt utterance of an learned that the little girl with the red hair that he was so madly in love with had a better command of the words that were not supposed to say J Still another drawback to widespread profanity Is Us use by men In ladles company Ive heard more men swearing in the company of ladles lately The reasoning is I guess if they want swear then we men can do it out in the open Were ALL liberated here see A sociable cocktail party begins to sound like a reunion of army And guess thats really the base of whole problem Liberation No one wants to be narrowminded or old fashioned Were all modern and trendy
