it again and it must be an Ontario record For the seventh consecutive year Newmarkets municipal administration has balanced the budget and held the lines on property taxes The towns share of the property tax bill is down this year less than a dollar cents average home assessed at but the decreases over the sevenyear life of the present administration add up to a considerable saving for property owners The tax decrease since 1970 is on an average home The towns share of taxes on that home were in and in they will be Pretty good when considered with the ad ministrations record of expanding municipal facilities road improvements and other capital works including an industrial park and when compared to the tax bills being issued by other levels of local government in the area this year York Regions share of the municipal tax bill is only slightly up this year in Newmarket but the regional school boards levy is up to on an average home Over the sevenyear period the school boards increases total 4738 and regional government has cost us a 712 increase over the senior municipal government levy of And in neighboring Aurora the towns portion of a property tax bill which management and a controlled growth which the administration has ensured paid its own way And it should be pointed out council balanced its budgets despite record rates of inflation during the past seven years The formula as stated by Mayor Bob Forhan and councils finance chairman Regional Councillor Ray Twinney sounds simple Give department heads firm guidelines limiting budgetary increases within their departments to six per cent then stick with them But as anybody who has run a business or kept a budget knows it just isnt that simple Every dollar in every deal is watched carefully and which has stabbed the Newmarket skyline since it was built in will be demolished shortly The little red brick Gothic church on its hilltop site on Ontario St has served its congregations well but has now been outgrown A larger and more modern structure will soon be built on the south side of Ontario St and is ex pected to be ready for use early next year One hundred and three years is not a long time in the life of many communities but for Newmarket the little church can be said to have served for well over half the time since the first settlers carved their clearings in the Holland River valley billboard This weekend organizations within the church will hold a Pioneer Day Festival in the downtown area to raise money for their 508000 building project A bingo will be held at the when the summer vacation period approached and the sky was blue and the sun hot They were standing near the Softball diamond at the Newmarket Fairgrounds and they were the type of kids you would call clean cut She was the cleanest cut As I walked past 1 could overhear her con versation They were all laughing and smiling and then I told him to I she howled and they were all nearconvulsed with laughter My golden dreams of summer girls went black I was stunned and shocked I shook it off rather easily because you do hear that word an awful lot lately That and a lot of other words that we growing young boys had always felt were our own particular jargon as we dressed in locker rooms stood on the corner and worked on old cars Only men used those words And only when they were with other men Boys were expected to use them loo because they were trying to become men and that was one of the first and easiest ways to do so Those words were the daily exclusive language of truck drivers soldiers auto mechanics hockey players and as mentioned earlier young boys trying to be men Those words were sometimes found written in washrooms along with amateur drawings questionable telephone numbers and comments about people usually girls who stood accused of incredible gymnastic sex acts There was some feeling of order about all that That type of thing was in its proper place Scrawled on the washroom wall or spoken In select company only Some of the more adventurous young men that I listed among my associates dared to enter the ladles washroom in a restaurant which We frequented and reported with bated breath that the walls therein carried much of the same type of information He was a notorious liar and a sensationalist and few of us believed him Now Im not so sure Do girls talk
