THE ERA WED NOVEMBER VOL NO A Mean Trick It takes some kind of a nut to play tricks on children Fortunately Newmarkets nuts arent as nutty as Toronto nuts- There in the Big Smoke a number of children were injured and fortunately others werent when they discovered razor blades in the apples and chocolate bars they received shelling out on Halloween In Newmarket a number of children found cigarette butts and ashes in bags that they thought contained peanuts or candies The perpetrator of this cruel hoax went to great pains as he or she went to the trouble of putting the butts and ashes in gailydecorated Halloween bags If a person doesnt want to be bothered by children on Halloween they simply do not have to answer the door Or if the noise of the cries of Shell Out bothers them they can go out for the evening To play a cruel hoax on a youngster who is participating in one of the joys of childhood is to say the least a mean trick DAWN AND SOLITUDE As autumn offers her golden flicker of warmth across Canada there is no lovelier spot than to be strolling across our abundant acres or foil- land As we swing into November we can do no more than only remember those shirtsleeved days of summer which are now another chapter of Canadian history A Big Step East Gwillimbury Township ratepayers will be asked on Nov to help remedy an intolerable situation They will be asked if they are in favor of speeding up to to artificial ice in the Arena The Era urges East Gwillimbury ratepayers to support this rela tively small expenditure At present the Arena is only suitable for hockey and pleasure skating a few weeks of the year These few weeks could be more or less depending on the whim of nature This means that the youngsters living in the Sharon Mount Albert and Park areas are deprived of the pleasures of skating and hockey for all but a few weeks a year on facilities near their communities If these youngsters want to skate or play hockey on artificial ice they must travel to Keswick Newmarket Aurora Bradford or even communities farther away This in effect is on the taxpayers of other communities But more important it is an imposition on the fathers and mothers of these children who have to drive them long distances over wintry roads Artificial ice at the Arena would help to remedy the situation But it should he just the first step towards a Community Centre for East Gwillimbury Township East Gwillimbury Township is the only municipality in northern York County which docs not have either an artificial ice arena or a community centre And East Gwillimbury Township is the fastestgrowing municipality SUGAR SPICE By Bill Smiley Some Of Us Remember in northern York County An Asset To Town i I ft J The new Senior Citizens apartments at the east and of Eagle St are a credit to the Town of and make this route into the town from St one of the most attractive Most of the apartments have now been occupied and although there is still some lastminute renovations to lie made the building is a distinct asset to Newmarket both inside and outside It is a credit to the architects the builders who finished the job ahead of contract and to the Ontario housing authorities who combined to make this section into a beauty spot Even this late In the year the grass and small lagoon west of the building arc worth seeing The recreation section to the right of the main entrance will help many of the residents enjoy an otherwise long lonesome winter evening without leaving the building There arc bachelor suites and onebedroom suites in the apartments and there are also laundry and common room facilities The site should he ideal for senior citizens in that it is very close to the downtown shopping section but far enough away from disturbing traffic noise and hazard 1 1 Dear Editor I noticed an article in last weeks Era which stated that teenagers are using walkietalkies to alert their fellow drag racers when the police are near THE ERA Sorving York County and I wondered how one minute there would I e dozens of cars and hund reds of teenagers and the next min ute there would be none dont particularly like the Idea of drag racing mainly because Im afraid these kids will get hurt But I suppose that drag racing is here to stay especially If these kids are going to use walkietalkies to warn them of the approach of the police The answer Is not in police crack down even harder on the drag racers Because theyre going to find a place no matter what hap- The answer Is finding a place for these youngsters to drag under VERY minor supervision If It becomes strict supervision then the youngsters will Just go and drag race illegally Surely there must be a lonely In one of the townships which could be used and no private prop erty damaged if there was an ac cident Perhaps even a vacant farmers field could be converted Anyway it seems a shame that these kids are chased all over the countryside for engaging in what seems to lie a harmless sport In Early What will the Flower Children do on Remembrance Day Will they refuse to buy a poppy because they associate it with past wars Or will they buy every poppy they can get their hands on and try to infuse a brew of opium so that they can turn on All I know is that theyll have a tough time getting any juice out of those paper poppies the Legion sells My daughter and I have a run ning battle about the Flower Child ren and hippies in She has a slogan Love is all you need which I find scrawled on things all over the house My contention is that these kids dont love anybody but themselves that they heartily hate anyone who doesnt subscribe to their half- baked philosophy if you want grace it with such a term and that most of them dont know enough about life to wipe their own noses This goes over big of course I am immediately relegated to that rapidlyincreasing segment of the population that doesnt understand anything is against everything and cant communicate Even though she docs admit they are pretty snobbish about their love deal I asked her why she didnt have a whack at the Legion contest Its open to all students and they can write an easy or a poem about the meaning of Remembrance Day Good cash prizes ami she writes well Hut it doesnt have any mean ing for me Dad I didnt have an uncle or anything killed in the war Well what do you do I apologized for the fact that both her wartime uncles are alive and that I couldnt get myself killed even with the utmost application of incompetence just so that she could really enjoy Remembrance Day Eighteen seconds later shes beefing because I havent given her a driving lesson In a whole week and shes just got to get her license before the snow flies Im afraid were going to have to face the fact that Remembrance Day does not mean much to the average kid today Its not nearly as important as the latest soul record And its a mild bore a solemn moment at school that has no connection with the Saturday night date or the really impor tant things of life Its just one of those silly things that middleaged people get all hung up about like hard work and honesty and chastity and all those other drags And its not just the kids who ignore it Most young adults sneer at it as a relic of Britannia Rules the Waves and Over the Top and beery old veterans Its much more fashionable to join a protest group and march on something or other City Hall The American Consulate It doesnt matter Break some windows Splash some paint And go home sniggering that We really show ed those fascists Theres a vicarious thrill in the thought that the police might whack a few heads even draw blood Not yours of course I wonder how many of those protesters would have the guts to clamber out of a muddy stinking trench and hurl themselves Into barbed wire and machineguns looking for their vitals I wonder how many of people who carry placards with their little fat jowls bouncing on their white collars could fly through a thou sand acres of redhot flak because somebody had to do it I wonder how many of the peti tionsigners with their clean Hocks and their underarm deodorant could take a week of puking and getting smashed about in a cor vette Maybe I sound a bitter Maybe I am Maybe they could and would some of them Rut until try it they shouldnt spit on others War is rotten War is stupid Rut to those who died Salad And to those who live with rotten lungs and arthritis and all the rest of it know that there are still some of us who think about yon on Remembrance Day Hold Your Breath Canadians who have prided them selves on breathing clean air and drinking pure water learned with a jolt last week that pollution has become one of this countrys major problems Much of last weeks pollution scare was concentrated at a single place a fertilizer plant near the small town of Dunnville The fears arose in the wake of a national TV program which suggested both cattle and humans were affected by fluoride particles let into the air from the fertilizer plant Indeed film of cattle collapsing prostrate in the fields left view shaken But a report by a Detroit doctor that two farmers in the district were dying of fluo rosis lost some of its impact when later teats produced no evidence of illness A fact little reported during the scare was that most of the charges came from Dr Waldbott of Detroit who turned out to be a wellknown opponent of fluoridation of drinking water This is not to suggest that Waldbotts charges are either cor rect or wrong This will be deter mined by an inquiry board appoint ed by the Ontario Government Certainly Canadians should be alerted to the growing menace of air and water pollution The Ontario Government last week assumed responsibility for pollution in the province under a new act which will enable authori ties if they are so inclined to take a tough line against indus trial waste matter And federally Health Minister Allan MncEachen promised that Ottawa will enact new laws to combat pollution The latest pollution scare at least pointed out that air and water contamination is not limited to Canadas major cities Both subur ban and rural areas are affected with many local circumstances all across Canada making particular communities extremely attractive There are growing signs of public awareness that no matter how desirable it may be to have a sub stantial industry in a community this must not be an excuse for polluting water and air Almost any industrial firm once it has made the plant and laud investment of a profitable opera tion will take whatever additional steps which may be forced on it to ensure that Its operation is not a menace to health Rut industry is not the only offender There are two other major sources of air pollution the automobile and the cigarette automobile is everyones concern because almost everyone drives and everyone suffers from exhaust fume pollution Manufac turers are now gearing up for exhaust control devices widen will liecome standard equipment on every ear greatest hope for eliminat ing this threat however lies In elect car Designs and plans now being advanced indicate electric ear will become a prac tical reality within the next ID years Such development will i make the internal combustion en gine obsolete thus eliminating one of the major causes of air pollu tion With the electric car youll pop into a service station every miles or so and exchange your battery for a new one for prob ably less than you now pay for gasoline The big personal health menace remains the cigarette Anyone who wilfully pumps quantities of smoke into their lungs has little justice for complaints about other sources of pollution No less a menace is the pollu tion of nearby every river stream and lake in Canada from either industrial waste or human or farm sewage Now that Centennial celebrat- tions are nearly ended Canadians should do battle with pollution in a national crusade deserving the support of every city and town from coast to coast Crier By Elizabeth Relter The just released audit report for of our Corporation of the Town of Newmarket throws a dim light in the darkness in which rate payers usually wallow on their towns financial operations A dim light only for not every body can successfully Interpret a story told in the language of finan cial statements Being a full page ad the topic merit some front the balance and figures True we could all go down see the Clerk and Treasurer foe an individual interview and ex planation but this would cer tainly not help to keep up the efficiency of the Considering the fact that tax exempt assessment In Newmarket Is almost large as the commercial and Individual assessment combined receipts In lieu of same ore quite pathetic and seem to prove a point
