go out for the evening To play a cruel hoax on a youngster who is participating in one of the joys of childhood is to say the least a mean trick DAWN AND SOLITUDE As autumn offers her golden flicker of warmth across Canada there is no lovelier spot than to be strolling across our abundant acres or foil- land As we swing into November we can do no more than only remember those shirtsleeved days of children who have to drive them long distances over wintry roads Artificial ice at the Arena would help to remedy the situation But it should he just the first step towards a Community Centre for East Gwillimbury Township East Gwillimbury Township is the only municipality in northern York County which docs not have either an artificial ice arena or a community centre And East Gwillimbury Township and I wondered how one minute there would I e dozens of cars and hund reds of teenagers and the next min ute there would be none dont particularly like the Idea of drag racing mainly because Im afraid place a fertilizer plant near the small town of Dunnville The fears arose in the wake of a national TV program which suggested both cattle and humans were affected by fluoride particles let into the air from the fertilizer plant Indeed film of cattle collapsing prostrate in the fields left view shaken But a report by a Detroit doctor that two farmers in the district were dying of fluo rosis lost some of its impact when later teats produced no evidence of illness A fact little reported during the scare was that most of the charges came from Dr Waldbott of Detroit who turned out to be a wellknown opponent of fluoridation of drinking water This is not to suggest that Waldbotts charges are either cor rect or wrong This will be deter mined by an inquiry board appoint ed by the Ontario Government Certainly Canadians should be alerted to the growing menace of air and water pollution The Ontario Government last week assumed responsibility for pollution in the province under a new act which will enable authori ties if they are so inclined to take a tough line against indus trial waste matter And federally Health Minister Allan MncEachen promised that Ottawa will enact new laws to combat pollution The latest pollution scare at least pointed out that air and water contamination is not limited to Canadas major cities Both subur ban and rural areas are affected with many local circumstances all across Canada making particular communities extremely attractive There are growing signs of public awareness that no matter how desirable it may be to have a sub stantial industry in a community this must not be an excuse for polluting water and air Almost any industrial firm once it has made the plant and laud investment of a profitable opera tion will take whatever additional
