them to get more economical milk production This modern feeding technique first intro duced by cooperatives over three years ago chal lenges cows to high production by heavier grain feeding in the early stages of lactation Lead feeding need not use any more grain per cow then feeding on the old one for four basis but the cow gets more of her lactation total of grain in the early stages when she is milking the heaviest Later as production drops off we cut back faster on the grain feeding This reduces feed intake in the last half of the lactation when many cows get too much grain anyway Lead feeding involves one problem though for the dairyman using a supplement containing urea Urea is a chemical nitrogencontaining material that can replace part of the protein in rations for ruminant animals Most cows ate brought up to calving on a dry and fitting ration containing little or no urea and then right after calving are switched to a urea- containing milking ration The problem is it takes the rumen a little while to adjust to the change in source of protein This pause or upset from re adjustment could result in a slowdown in the normal rapid climb in milk just at the critical lime It may cause the cow to peak a little lower than she should Now our nutritionists arc recommending a change in the feeding program They suggest that if you intend to use a grainsupplement mixture containing urea take the cows off dry and fitting feed and put them on the milking ration three weeks before calving Of course the protein content of the grain mix you use will depend on the kind of roughage you have to feed this year It could vary from as high as 20 per cent down to 14 per cent Youll need the highest protein with a roughage ration made up mostly of good com silage which provides plenty of energy but relatively little protein Remember that poor quality hay does not nec essarily mean you need to feed higher protein supplement Usually with poor hay you feed more pounds of grain mix and since this grain mix is in protein than most forage you need proportionately less protein in the grain mix Willi heavy feeding compensate for poor rough age a 14 per cent mix when fed at high
