Branch Newmarket Branch CHANGE TO DAIRY RATION BEFORE CALVING A steadily increasing number of practical and profitminded milk producers are proving to their satisfaction that lead feeding does enable them to get more economical milk production This modern feeding technique first intro duced by cooperatives over three years ago chal lenges cows to high production by heavier grain feeding in the early stages of lactation Lead feeding need not use any more grain per cow then feeding on the old one for four basis but the cow gets more of her lactation total of grain in the early stages when she is milking the heaviest Later as production drops off we cut back faster on the grain feeding This reduces feed intake in the last half of the lactation when many cows get too much grain anyway Lead feeding involves one problem though for the dairyman using a supplement containing urea Urea is a chemical nitrogencontaining material that can replace part of the protein in rations for ruminant animals Most cows ate brought up to calving on a dry and fitting ration containing little or no urea and then right after calving are switched to a urea- containing milking ration The problem is it takes the rumen a little while to adjust to the change in source of protein This pause or upset from re adjustment could result in a slowdown in the normal rapid climb in milk just at the critical lime It may cause the cow to peak a little lower than she should Now our nutritionists arc recommending a change in the feeding program They suggest that if you intend to use a grainsupplement mixture containing urea take the cows off dry and fitting feed and put them on the milking ration three weeks before calving Of course the protein content of the grain mix you use will depend on the kind of roughage you have to feed this year It could vary from as high as 20 per cent down to 14 per cent Youll need the highest protein with a roughage ration made up mostly of good com silage which provides plenty of energy but relatively little protein Remember that poor quality hay does not nec essarily mean you need to feed higher protein supplement Usually with poor hay you feed more pounds of grain mix and since this grain mix is in protein than most forage you need proportionately less protein in the grain mix Willi heavy feeding compensate for poor rough age a 14 per cent mix when fed at high levels will frequently be high enough to meet the cows needs some of our dairy rations do not enn ui any urea If you are feeding these there is no problem with the change from dry to milking rat ions Vou can continue to use the dry and fitting ration right up to calving and then make the swiich with no adverse effects Era NewmarketAurora Ob Wed November 1SS7 tothe fashioned farm to Tho modern short length of time When they get to this height most people start expecting fruits to appear in the not too distant future Eventually when none ap pear they suspect neglect on their part Nothing could be further from the truth for citrus fruits only develop on specially grafted trees which can be ordered from the gar den centre or florist Despite the lack of fruits trees grown from citrus seeds have very attractive shiny green leaves and are among our better house plants Select ing the seeds at breakfast time sowing them a pot watching them germinate and grow can be fascinating fan for any member of the fam ily For sowing the seeds youll need a sixInch size clay or plastic pot some commercial African violet soil a piece of glass at least six inches square and a few small stones or broken pieces of pot to be placed in the bottom of the pot for drainage Make a start by placing the drainage material in the bottom of the pot and then add the soil I always fill the pot to the rim and then firm the soil down with the finger tips After firming the Farm Report By Al Wall Agricultural Representative for York County This year is sure to be remembered for its abundant rain On the plus side there hasnt been a crop short of moisture Harvesting has been different story Hay and grain were both very difficult and now getting corn off is difficult Late silo filling isnt really too serious With big and harvesters that chop corn short silage will pack tight enough to keep well The real loss is right in the field Stalk breakage birds and wind all cut into yields Fall plowing is badly behind schedule but there still may be a chance to get it caught up Fall cultivation for weed control has been almost impos sible The war with weeds this year has everything in favor of the enemy We will need real offensive going in 1968 to get back at all the weed population that has built up this year I was asked last week about spraying weeds now In alfalfa mixtures This is good practice to get dandelions yellow rocket or that has established with alfalfa The principle Is that the 2 will not harm the alfalfa since it is almost dormant but the weeds still have enough life in them to be killed by the spray We have reached the time limit now though Spraying later than this would not likely be effec tive because the weeds are almost dormant With lots of moisture in the ground it is easy to take soil samples now A soil test report will really help when fertilizer has to be bought for next year and Im sure that most of tho time it makes fertilizer dollars work far Alfalfa Condition NEWMARKET A con dition of alfalfa which has caused discoloring and drying out of the plant is being care fully investigated by scien tists at the Ontario Agricul tural College New seeding and aftermath of alfalfa in all parts of the province have been affected year Tests are being conducted by the Soils Department On tario Agrciulturol College lo determine what suspected trace element ex cesses or deficiencies may be involved Other possibilities such as disease organisms and Insect problems were ruled out by researchers as likely onuses of the problem Var ious soil types and both fertile and infertile situations showed signs of the condition In fields to the end of August aftermath re covery from base of af fected plants appears to be normal root systems of affected plants also appear to bo no different from those of normal plants These facts in dicate that the injury may be of a temporary nature It Is suggested that alfalfa be wrong with the shoot or growers
