loo of this week is to pay tribute to the thousands of men across our great Dominion who arc in direct contact with our young players in the roles of coaches managers referees and league officials Also it has as an aim to testify to the debt of gratitude that Canadian youth and all Canada for that matter owes to these men the service clubs mer chants industrialists and other organizations who sponsor ho ckey for Canadian boys Another aim is to encourage parents to take an interest in their sons participation in Can adas national game Just how many parents have been to the arena this winter to see their boy play hockey There are not many who can find time to do this Isnt it about time you did I am speaking now to these parents who have not been to the rink to see their boy or boys play hockey This week ahead being minor hockey week would be an Ideal time for every parent to attend a minor hockey game Tin a way your attendance will be small compensation to the many minor hockey workers who toil in a labor of love to make it possible for your son to play hockey Without the coaches managers trainers cardrivers sponsors executives gatewatch ers and conveners the local pro gram progress made by the North York minor hockey league The league starting with ten teams five years ago has expanded to teams It is today one of the largest leagues operating under the banner of the Ontario minor hockey association The league has a registration of players from 13 different communities Add to this if you will the many coaches managers trainers sponsors etc and the figure rises well over the 600 mark The value of operating a dis trict league with nearalhomc competition has proved its worth Since the league was organized except for an Aurora team of no district learns had an nexed an Ontario crown Since the North York loop into existence Newmarket has won iwo Ontario titles also Nobleton and King City teams However with district hockey men the winning of champion ships is but a secondary feature OPTIMIST WW TWO GAMES Harvey Glbney and Garr ett had the Newmarket bantams going for goals and getting them last week At home the Optimists thumped Bradford while at Saturday they turned in a classy passing attack to earn a win over Johnny LaPlant a Hub arrival last spring via Simcoe planted three goals to lead the Optimists sharp performance against Brad ford Jim McDonald contributed two goals while Larry Keffer Terry Keith Burling and Dennis Foley unlimbered a goal each in the winning cause OReilly Doug Andrews Gary Palcthorpe and Brian Bales gained marks in the assist column Hero broke through for the visitors to spoil Chuck dardV bid for a shutout At Alliston Optimist collected seven goals and seven players I figured in the score column Goal- getters were stature of teams has been a feature of the district minor hockey picture The league today with over players registered is one of the largest operating under the bann er of the Ontario Minor Hockey
