Newmarket Sports Editor Across Canada from coast to coast the week of Feb is being observed as Minor Hockey Week The objective of minor hockey week is to focus public attention on the physical and character building and other benefits derived from hockey by our young citizens and to still further encourage the promotion of minor hockey in every com munity in Canada Another Important objective loo of this week is to pay tribute to the thousands of men across our great Dominion who arc in direct contact with our young players in the roles of coaches managers referees and league officials Also it has as an aim to testify to the debt of gratitude that Canadian youth and all Canada for that matter owes to these men the service clubs mer chants industrialists and other organizations who sponsor ho ckey for Canadian boys Another aim is to encourage parents to take an interest in their sons participation in Can adas national game Just how many parents have been to the arena this winter to see their boy play hockey There are not many who can find time to do this Isnt it about time you did I am speaking now to these parents who have not been to the rink to see their boy or boys play hockey This week ahead being minor hockey week would be an Ideal time for every parent to attend a minor hockey game Tin a way your attendance will be small compensation to the many minor hockey workers who toil in a labor of love to make it possible for your son to play hockey Without the coaches managers trainers cardrivers sponsors executives gatewatch ers and conveners the local pro gram could not be carried out Can you imagine for a minute Canada without hockey Of course you cant But isnt it just possible too many of us take the value of this our national game for granted and fail to realize the many benefits our youth derive through playing this vlgoious essentiallyCana dian game id our own community ap proximately boys on 28 teams from the five year olds to the juvenile age group arc par ticipating in our expansive minor program under the banner of the Newmarket minor hockey associ ation There are more than persons probably its more like 100 actively engaged in keeping minor hockey operating Your scribe would only be do ing his duty by publicly thank ing them one and all fof their untiring efforts Would that there was space to name each and every coach manager spon sor trainer cardriver execu tive convener and minor hockey worker Let us pause one and all to give hearty thanks to all these willing workers As we men tioned before you can show your appreciation in a small way by attending a minor hockey game this Week Minor hockey men at Aurora like their brethren here arc do ing a tremendous job in teaching the boys the value of true sports manship Helping lo develop their competitive spirit and to respect those in authority such as referees team officials etc It being minor hockey week it would only seem right and fitting to recognize the tremen dous progress made by the North York minor hockey league The league starting with ten teams five years ago has expanded to teams It is today one of the largest leagues operating under the banner of the Ontario minor hockey association The league has a registration of players from 13 different communities Add to this if you will the many coaches managers trainers sponsors etc and the figure rises well over the 600 mark The value of operating a dis trict league with nearalhomc competition has proved its worth Since the league was organized except for an Aurora team of no district learns had an nexed an Ontario crown Since the North York loop into existence Newmarket has won iwo Ontario titles also Nobleton and King City teams However with district hockey men the winning of champion ships is but a secondary feature OPTIMIST WW TWO GAMES Harvey Glbney and Garr ett had the Newmarket bantams going for goals and getting them last week At home the Optimists thumped Bradford while at Saturday they turned in a classy passing attack to earn a win over Johnny LaPlant a Hub arrival last spring via Simcoe planted three goals to lead the Optimists sharp performance against Brad ford Jim McDonald Wright Chuck Goddard defensemen Doug Andrews Dennis Foley Frank McGuire and forwards Gary John Larry Terry Brian Bales Peter Keith Burling Ken Needier and OReilly as compared with teaching boys the value of true sportsmanship how to give and take how to co operate and in general promote the physical well being of our hockey boys All the gentlemen and they arc numerous who hove had a hand in the operation of the North York league are to be congratulated for this interest in our future citizens To close any story on minor hockey without pausing to send bouquets to Jack Christie and the members of the OMHA executive staff would be over looking the finest hockey work ers in this country Mr Chris- tic assumed the secretaryship of the when there were less than 100 teams Under Jack Christies able efficient guid ance and tremendous work the OMHA has grown to over teams and with a registration of over 22000 players Of special interest too to district hockey men is the fact Jim Austin of Stouffvillc has served on the OMHA executive for many years Your scribe deems it a pleasure to be associated with these communityminded citi zens acting as district convener for the OMHA Next week being Minor Ho ckey Week were devoting our whole column the subject Elsewhere in this issue youll find special articles on minor ho ckey It is our fond hope that you wont forget lo salute these
