-y- m f u Pages froth the Notebook There is Christmas and there is two aspects of this season Christmas the idea is as it has been always but it is seldom until the even ing of that many begin to think it Some never do But has a dif ferent meaning for every in dividual one sees it and accepts in a dif ferent way Few rebel against it is a season of rush and turmoil it is a time J when a tremendous amount of energy is directed at the con- of goods in the form of pressure to urge them to buy more and more to the businessman means a frenzied effort to push up the volume of business to the high school student it means the pressure of Christmas exams to the policeman it means an increase in traffic accidents and drunk driving cases to the newspapers it means heavy ad vertising rush rush and pre mature deadlines Everyone gets a big headache at some time during the season Looking at these unpleasant features of the season there is not too much to be said in its favor A person must be tough these days to keep up vith the pace Youve got to work hard keep up that volume sell sell sell because it is the season when the pay off comes for all those slump periods during other seasons You are lucky if you escape without the development of an ulcer With all this rush and pres sure it really is a wonder find time at the last minute just to enjoy the fine thoughts about the real Christmas As we said some never do find the time Glover a radio an nouncer told the story the other night a man in the city who was seen to rush to a phone booth downtown and call the shopper service of a large department store Two shirts with soft collars and plain cufs gift wrapped he ordered to be sent to Cal gary and dont forget put a little card or something inside sign it Best Wishes from Fred Mary and the Kids and oh yes put it on my charge ac count would you Oh I nearly forgot write at the top of the card Tor Dad Yes thanks goodbye The incident was described as just another one of those heartfelt thoughts of giving at Christmas time Yes we find it difficult not to be cynical too It gets worse every year not even time to get the tree up early or do the shopping without a list until the last minute We wonder if we will the strength left for the real Christmas this year But we resolve that once the daylight hours of Wednesday December 24 have gone we will banish all thoughts of com mercialism of the rush and turmoil of pre mature deadlines volume of business and we will try to think about the real Christmas The trouble with this lized age is that we are so in volved in largescale prepara tions for an important occasion like Christmas that the occa sion has gone before the pre parations are over It is all madness From the Files of 25 arid 50 Years A Mrs Armstrong of like diplomats do in Ottawa arid Moscow Wo had parkas and type for the open spaces- Slim as picked lip an axe and stepped briskly out Into cold crisp morning Slim and I were off to the wood to chop a pair of nice Scotch pine trees for Christmas You said Slim aint got any use these folks what goes out and buys trees Softies they are They -dont- know what pleasure it is to go out into the woods on winters morn breathe in the crisp cold air and chop down ones own Christmas tree Yep You really get the Christmas spirit when you swing the old axe and fell a good pine as you Tim- her across the hilts and wood- countryside Slim pointed out Ycp sure do I agreed We hiked out to the third and on east of town at a brisk pace After a couple of hours walk we came to a good looking woods and found a nice grove of Scotch pine feel like Paul this said Slim as he took a good grip on his axe and eyed a nice six foot pine up and down It was a morning You could here a hound chasing a raohil practically to Slim raised his axe for the big swiiuj Hold villain save that tree The cry echoed hack and forth between the hills the hecks that said Slim Hood of Sherwood Forest- It rtas not Robin Hood- of Sherwood It was a Lands and Forests officer and he was clutching a copy of the Era and doin out here in the woods the Erie questioned Slim I afraid will have to take you boys in the officer said in a calm even voice know it is an offence to trees oh Crown land and what is more this is not only Crown it is the Vivian Forest It says right here in last weeks Erie that you cant cut trees on Crown land unless you are a bona fina camper and need it for fire wood And course you cant steal trees from private property said the officer In spite of protests to the sheriff we were marched to his car and driven into town Slim tried to contend that we were just innocent bony campers but it didnt work and we paid our fine Then we went out and paid 3 each for two trees at the street corner The Top Six J riches by Dairy Farmr Somewhere during the time of school concerts and the first avalanche of greeting cards Chrostmas sort of sneaks around the corner We become mellow In our thoughts and lose our ability to get excited Instead our thoughts turn to more pleasant channels and we take stock of the years happen- We have much to be grateful for some things that happened through the untiring efforts of others and some through good fortune We might as well ad mit that a lot of good things were just due to the extreme good fortune of living in this country of ours We he grateful for the fact thai foot and mouth dis ease didnt spread like wildfire through country This was a surprise to all those who knew what this disease can do should he thankful the more so since the Initial hesi tation gave the scourge such a head start gratitude should go to those too who worked so untiringly once lion got underway At the same time let our sympathy go to those who lost the effort of many years hard labor and did so knowing that this was for the common good Let us also be thankful that this hit us all at a time when there were some reserves to fall back on Did you ever what a similar out break could have meant during the war or during a period of severe depression We had a Hying and upsett ing year a year of disappoint ments in some respects Many a dream didnt materialize Some of our hopes were lost in the embargo and loss of mark But It was a year and a year when we had to take a closer look at ourselves and if come up with the may be wiser today dangers of international troubles were close our hearts We got through the year without that storm loose and we still hope that as time gees on have more reason to be hopeful irritated as at our organizations and of those are at the head of often felt that could be better if only we could all see the goal Being Christmas we feel thru we should admit to some humility and that in a it might be if a lot of people weregoing ahead slow ly and sometimes very slowly maybe this is better than action that is not well thought out And If there Is a wish from the Chilis that visits adults is for a thinking cap for alt of us to find letter ways to he better citizens The year to will have many thorny to face very- is partly because of and partly because human knows no will have to fight It preserve our way in We will stand fast in our belief that we are tight hot only because this the way we want it but also because it Is lit the interest of the whole com We wish you all a good Christmas May we all bet ter men for the experience of
