Application has been made to the Legislature of Ontario for the formation of a new county, to comprise three townships from Grey, three from Wellington, two towns and two villages with Mt. Forest as County Town. Last week the Dundalk /Herald/ suggested something else, viz:--that Proton, Melancthon, Osprey, Artemesia, Glenelg and Egremont be set apart as a new County with Dundalk as the Hub. Now we have something infinitely better than either. The first objection to leaving the county as it is, is the great distance from some of the outlying townships to the county town, and the want of railway communication; the second great objection is the unwieldy proportions which large county councils have assumed, and Grey county in particular. Now the latter is likely to undergo a material change in the near future, as steps have already been taken towards having the representation to county councils reduced at least one half, so that this objection will doubtless be shortly removed; and as for bringing the outlying districts into easy access to the county town, all that is required is to change the head quarters to Markdale. It may be easily seen by reference to the county map that our town is geographically in the centre, and when the railway is [extended] from Durham to Meaford or Thornbury, we will have direct railway communication through the county from east to west and from north to south, thereby entirely removing the difficulty of reaching the capital. When the ratepayers of this county [camly] considers this scheme, we are pursuaded that all others will speedily drop into oblivion.
