The Gamblers next opponent in O.A.S.A. action will be the Sutton "Irish House" team who eliminated Alliston in "two straight games by scores of 12-1 and 10-0. No dates have yet been set for the Green- bank-Sutton series but it should be a dandy. The book on the Sutton team is that they have an outstanding left handed pitcher in Brad Heintz- man and a long ball hitting club. Watch this paper for playing dates for this series. The winner of the Gambler-Sutton series will meet the winner of the Port Perry Legion vs. Claremont series which also promises to be a thriller. So lots of exciting fastball action coming up for the fans in the Greenbank-Port Perry area. In league action last week the Gamblers - managed a split as they won at home against Uxbridge but dropped a squeeker in Brougham. In Greenbank Park last Monday night the Gamblers shut out Ux- bridge River Valley by a 2-0 score behind the four hit pitching of Roland Osske. Osske scattered his hits evenly over the game and was never in serious trouble. He struck out seven Ux- bridge batters and issued three walks. Hugh Johnston led the Greenbank attack with two. Hits off the Ux- bridge veteran Norm Roberb with other Gambler hits going to Brian Till, Don Beaton and Dennis Romeril. Incidentally Dennis Romeril underwent surgery to repair sever- ed tendons in his hand this week and will be lost to the ball club for an undisclosed period of time. Hopefully he will heal quickly and soon be roaming the Gambler outfield again in search of long fly balls. On Tuesday night in Brougham, the Gam- blers dropped a 4-3 decision to. the Broug- ham team as after two were out in the last inning and nobecdy on base, the head hunters collected three straight singles to score the winning run. Blair McNeil was the winning pitcher for Brougham with Ken Goreski taking his first loss in league play this season. Other news in fastball this week concerned the folding of the Zephyr 'A's team from further league competition. Apparently they ran into a string of injuries plus work commitments and they could not field PORT PERRY STAR -- Tuesday, July 31, 1984 -- 19 | Gamblers furn attention to the Sutton Irish a team, The league will con- tinue with the other twelve teams and the entire Zephyr "A" schedule will be deleted. Port started off Sat- urday playing 2 year defending champs Ottawa Senators and were edged 2-1 -in an extremely tight played game. Randy Under- wood started on the mound for the Legion squad and only allowed 3 hits while striking out 11 Senators. Ottawa started off after 2 out in the 1st inning with a single and triple followed by a passed ball 3rd strike to give them a 2-0 lead. They only managed another single and walk in the remaining 6 Port Legion started slowly until the 4th inning when Colin Wackett singled and was driven in by Dave Dickson's single to centre field. Port rallied in the 5th and 6th innings with runners to 2nd base, but couldn't advance them further. In the fatefull 8th inning, Ottawa put together a single, stolen base and an RBI single to win the game. As for the tournament and trip to the Nation's capital a general con- senses taken was that a good time was had by all. Earlier in the week during league Port Legion defeated Whitby Legion 3-2 and the Oshawa Juniors 5-4. In Whitby, hits by Tim Thompson, Doug Scott, Bill St. John and Rick Evans in the 2nd inning provided the margin of victory. Whitby fought back with runs in the 6th and 8th innings off reliever John Annis. Winning pitcher Lawrie Williams had left the game after 5 innings with a blister on his pitching hand. At home Wednesday night Port jumped to a quick 3-1 lead after one inning on hits by Dave Dickson and Doug Scott after Rick Evans had been hit by the pitch and Tim Thompson walked. Oshawa tied the game in the 8th inning on home runs by Dave Hoffman and Roger Posaki.
