In league action last week the Gamblers - managed a split as they won at home against Uxbridge but dropped a squeeker in Brougham. In Greenbank Park last Monday night the Gamblers shut out Ux- bridge River Valley by a 2-0 score behind the four hit pitching of Roland Osske. Osske scattered his hits evenly over the game and was never in serious trouble. He struck out seven Ux- bridge batters and issued three walks. Hugh Johnston led the Greenbank attack with two. Hits off the Ux- bridge veteran Norm Roberb with other Gambler hits going to Brian Till, Don Beaton and Dennis Romeril. Incidentally Dennis Romeril underwent surgery to repair sever- ed tendons in his hand this week and will be lost to the ball club for an undisclosed period of time. Hopefully he will heal quickly and soon be roaming the Gambler outfield again in search of long fly balls. On Tuesday night in Brougham, the Gam- blers dropped a 4-3 decision to. the Broug- ham team as after two were out in the last inning and nobecdy on base, the head hunters collected three straight singles to score the winning run. Port started off Sat- urday playing 2 year defending champs Ottawa Senators and were edged 2-1 -in an extremely tight played game. Randy Under- wood started on the mound for the Legion squad and only allowed 3 hits while striking out 11 Senators. Ottawa started off after 2 out in the 1st inning with a single and triple followed by a passed ball 3rd strike to give them a 2-0 lead. They only managed another single and walk in the remaining 6 Port Legion started slowly until the 4th inning when Colin Wackett singled and was driven in by Dave Dickson's single to centre field. Port rallied in the 5th and 6th innings with runners to 2nd base, but couldn't advance them further. Dropping to the losers side of the draw saw the Legion team face off against the 1st place team in the Ottawa League Peter's Car Radios and drop a squeaker 3-2 John Annis started on the mound for Port and was relieved by Under- wood in the 6th inning with the score tied 1-1 and 2 runners on base. Whitby fought back with runs in the 6th and 8th innings off reliever John Annis. Winning pitcher Lawrie Williams had left the game after 5 innings with a blister on his pitching hand. At home Wednesday night Port jumped to a quick 3-1 lead after one inning on hits by Dave Dickson and Doug Scott after Rick Evans had been hit by the pitch and Tim Thompson walked. Oshawa tied the game in the 8th inning on home runs by Dave Hoffman and Roger Posaki. Port won the game in the 8th inning after MIke Healey led off with a double and was sacri- ficed to 3rd by Bill St. John and sacrificed home by Rick Evan's long fly ball to centre field.
