The Canadian Champion, Tuesday, October 1, 2002-25 &SPORTS Under-18 Magic cap k ir season with titie win By STEVE LeBLANC The Champion Milton's Under-18 girls soccer squad used equal parts dramna and domninance to wrap up its season with championship gold in Michigan September 22. The mix was delivered at the Glohal Soccer Toumnamrent- where the Sargent Farm Magic rallied from an opening-round defeat to take top honours among the nine- team field. With the toumament title hanging in the balance against Michigan's Mesa Fire, for- ward l-olly Goddard deposited an upstairs header with about three minutes remaining Io win 1-0. Setting her up with a pictur- esque cross feed was Amy DiPalma. Sister Emma Goddard shared the spot- light in the nail-biting championship clash as the impromptu goalie. Replacing an absent Davida Denich, Milton's second- string cager made Iwo dynamite saves through the early going and was steady the rest of the way to preserve the shutout vic- tory. "h was a real back and forth battle. very exciting," said coach Louie DiPalma. whose team won two tournaments and reached the finals of a third this summer while finishing fourth in the South Region Soccer League's Elite Division. I-olly Goddard and Ainsley Kent stood taîl up front. while doing so in split duty between mid-field and defense was Ashley Rainey. Needing to, score six times to, win a goal- differential tiebreaker and advance to the finals, the local ladies began the tourna- men's second day by blasting the Midland Storm 7-0. Amy DiPalma led the hit parade wvith three goals, two resulting from throw-ins, while tallying twice was Kent. Aiding in the lopsided victory with sin- gle markers were Amanda Kiuper and Heather Moon - who along with Valerie Faiio and Krista Lenardon offered spirited play to reach the gold-medal showdown. While the win was neyer really in doubt, Emma Goddard did corne up big on a penalty shot to eamn the first of two shutouts. The back-to-back wmns followed an opening-day split in which the champs were edged by the Ann Arbor Arsenal 1 -0 before rallying to knock off USL Teamn United 3-1 - thanks largely to, a two-goal showing by Holly Goddard. Milton had to rally from an early deftcit in game two, and helping out the cause with the other goal was Kent. Creating a number of scoring chances in the win were Amy DiPalma and Sylvie Noolandi. Against Ann Arbor. Emma Goddard was rock solid between the pipes while provid- ing exceptional defensive help was Erica Ercolani. Strong supporting roles throughout the toumament were offered hy Kiuper, Ruth Hamon and Ashley Grant. ý/Haydar scores in debut Photo by GRAHAM PAINE vThe run stops here Milton District High School's Jordan Gunter gets brought down by a Lester B.
