very com mitted to film its not frill its an integral part of the library service The woman speaking is Marie Deane audioVisual coordinator for the GBRIS which serves 74 public libraries in four counties including Sim coe County Mrs Deane spends lot of time watching films shes responsible for supervis ing and updating the systems collection of more than 3000 prints of 16 mm films Films are something of secret service offered by public libraries although thats changing as films both shorts and fulllength features become more popular for enter tainment and educational use Last year 400000 people in the Georgian Bay region saw films loaned from libraries thats Close to the total population of the region The film service run by the GBRLS was started in 1969 Its the first major service run by the system in terms of finan cial commitment says Mrs Deane The collection began with donation of 600 films from the Bluewater Film Federation and the Simcoe County Film Federation In the first year of operation the film service bought 300 new films bring the collection to 900 films After 10 years of steady growth the col lection has increased almost fourfold The films in the collection are documentaries like Ron Sprys film on the October Crisis Mrs Deane said the library system will continue to expand the col lection of features future ac quisitions will include Mon 0n cle Antoine and Harry ltaskys Oscarwinning documentary Homage to Chagall Mrs Deane caught the film but while working at the Scot tish Film Institute in Glasgow She met John Grierson founder of the National Film Board and later moved to Canada where she founded the film library at the NFB office in Hamilton She joined the GBRIAS in 1970 and for nine years was the co ordinator of Film Showcase the biggest
