very com mitted to film its not frill its an integral part of the library service The woman speaking is Marie Deane audioVisual coordinator for the GBRIS which serves 74 public libraries in four counties including Sim coe County Mrs Deane spends lot of time watching films shes responsible for supervis ing and updating the systems collection of more than 3000 prints of 16 mm films Films are something of secret service offered by public libraries although thats changing as films both shorts and fulllength features become more popular for enter tainment and educational use Last year 400000 people in the Georgian Bay region saw films loaned from libraries thats Close to the total population of the region The film service run by the GBRLS was started in 1969 Its the first major service run by the system in terms of finan cial commitment says Mrs Deane The collection began with donation of 600 films from the Bluewater Film Federation and the Simcoe County Film Federation In the first year of operation the film service bought 300 new films bring the collection to 900 films After 10 years of steady growth the col lection has increased almost fourfold The films in the collection are tonight from to pm and musical groups Saskatchewn and Alberta Canada Calling all Scots sights and sounds Swing band performs The Kings of Kempenfelt swing band led by John Sisman perform free concert at Fred Grant Square The concert sponsored by the Downtown Improvement Board is the first in series of Friday night concerts in the square Future concerts will feature other local musicians 18 Wheels coming The Tarragon Theatre production of 18 Wheels play about longdistance truckers comes to Barrie on Sept 18 for one show at the Georgian College Theatre The show is spon sored by the Gryphon Theatre Foundation and marks the first stop on seven week tour covering Ontario Manitoba The plays author is John Gray whose most recent effort Billy Bishop Goes To War has won critical acclaim across The show makes it final stop in Orillia on Nov Sunday from to pm the Simcoe County Museum will present its 7th annual Scottish Day Featured performers in clude the Gaelic Choir and lachan Band highland dancers from the academies of Joan Doran and Carolyn Dewar country dancing by the Glenquaich Group of Barrie and singer Tom Park There will be hot and cold refreshments at the log cabin and scones and pastries at bake table Admission is $1 for adults 50 cents for students and senior citizens 25 cents for school chilren and no charge for pre schoolers Family memberships will be honored Basil Hathbone Many features are booked solid until the spring of 19811 lot of people are turning off the TV and putting on Films says Mrs Deane The collection of features is not large but it covers everything from Rus sian classics like Potemkin to John Wayne classics like The Quiet Man When choosing feature films Mrs Deane looks for classics that will be popular for many yeas Some features are documentaries like Ron Sprys film on the October Crisis Mrs Deane said the library system will continue to expand the col lection of features future ac quisitions will include Mon 0n cle Antoine and Harry ltaskys Oscarwinning documentary Homage to Chagall Mrs Deane caught the film but while working at the Scot tish Film Institute in Glasgow She met John Grierson founder of the National Film Board and later moved to Canada where she founded the film library at the NFB office in Hamilton She joined the GBRIAS in 1970 and for nine years was the co ordinator of Film Showcase the biggest
