Church officials wary By SHEILA coo For The Examiner If you are asked to buy candy for work in missions dur ing the preChristmas season better think about it Rev John Howard chairman of the Barrie and District Ministerial Association Wednesday wamed Barrie and area residents that to his knowledge none of the Christian chur ches are conducting housetohouse sale of candy peanuts or other confectionery items to raise money for missions During the past two evenings people in Riverwood farms and Georgian College area subdivisions have been canvass ed by young people selling chocolate bars and peanuts The canvassers say the proceeds go for work in the missions or for the missionaries Questioned as to what denomina tion they represent they say they are members of the Unification Church The Unification Church is nonChristian cult headed by the Rev Sun Myung Moon an immensely wealthy Korean whose followers believe he is messiah Rev Howard expalined Cult members are very active around the Eaton centre in Toronto Their activities have been the subject of much concern and controversy in recent years he said IAII CHARGES The cults activities in Canada received widespread publicity in March1978 when the aide to Canadian cabinet minister laid charges against his former boss who attemp ted to have him deprogrammed after he became member of the Unification church Many of Moons followers believe that he is the messiah His wife is known as Mother of the Universe The National Council of Churches in the United States rejected bid for membership from the Unification Church on the grounds that it is not Christian church Rev Howard associate pastor of Collier Street United Church said he became aware of the canvass when one his parisioners in the Riverwood farm area phoned him to say she had brought peanuts from person who said the money was to be used in the missions Members of the Unification Church frequently approach young people who are looking for something to believe in says the Rev Howard The routine is to invite them to at tend meeting then weekend in one of their centres The philosophy becomes kind of indoctrination program Following this the young converts are encouraged to go doortodoor selling candy for Rev Moon who is already very wealthy man One of the objections to the program is that it encourages young people to leave families friends or anyone who could provide link with their former lifestyle The young con verts become very dependent on this group for friendship and support They cut off all family ties and the Moonies become their family explained Mr Howard LTS II FAMILIES The Ven Basil Tonks archdeacon 0f Simeoe County for the Anglican communion said the kinds of methods used by the Moonies are classic brain washing methods The youngsters who get into it are cut off entirely from their families Much of the tieprogramming we have heard about involves efforts of parents of young people who have gone in to the Unification Church Archdeacon Tonks said there is kind of deception about how they approach people The citizens of Barrie should be made aware of who these people are They should not be car ried awav bv the spirit of the Christmas season and hand money out at the door unless they are sure what it is going to be used for He added that in nine years in Barrie he had never heard of any church canvassing for assistance through the sale of candy Rev Len OMalley added his voice to the warning to the Roman Catholic community No member of the Catholic church is collecting doorto door for any cause at this time of year he said The Unification Church is not recognized as member of the Christian community of churches Mrs Dorothy Owen said she paid $2 for candy bar at her door because she believed the money was going to help mis Sionaries Its getting near Christmas and believed the money was going to good cause she said The role of the police in doortodoor sales is restricted to infractions of city byIaws Deputy Police Chief Reg Neathways said that the sale of candy by religious organization of any denomination does not in itself constitute lawbreaking He said misrepresenta tion mUSt be proven and that the sellers would hare to obtain license before being allowed to canvass Barrie streets But city clerk Ben Straughan told The Examiner no ap plication for Hawkers and Peddlars license had been either requested or granted to the Lnification church or any other organization in recent days Su pe ecl NOW TO PLEASE EVERYONE GIVE mother of BRANTFORI oiii iCPi fiCG 38yearold mother of three
