Church officials wary By SHEILA coo For The Examiner If you are asked to buy candy for work in missions dur ing the preChristmas season better think about it Rev John Howard chairman of the Barrie and District Ministerial Association Wednesday wamed Barrie and area residents that to his knowledge none of the Christian chur ches are conducting housetohouse sale of candy peanuts or other confectionery items to raise money for missions During the past two evenings people in Riverwood farms and Georgian College area subdivisions have been canvass ed by young people selling chocolate bars and peanuts The canvassers say the proceeds go for work in the missions or for the missionaries Questioned as to what denomina tion they represent they say they are members of the Unification Church The Unification Church is nonChristian cult headed by the Rev Sun Myung Moon an immensely wealthy Korean whose followers believe he is messiah Rev Howard expalined Cult members are very active around the Eaton centre in Toronto Their activities have been the subject of much concern and controversy in recent years he said IAII CHARGES The cults activities in Canada received widespread time of year he said The Unification Church is not recognized as member of the Christian community of churches Mrs Dorothy Owen said she paid $2 for candy bar at her door because she believed the
