fFVI US IOThe Barrie Examiner Saturday Nov 1976 Playoffs dates set by curlers By BILL lRRAN Playoff dates for local rinks participating in the current first series games at the Barrie curling club have been arranged Some 336 curlers representing 84 rinks are battling it out in four groups for the honors with another 40 signed up when spares are needed As explained by secretary Frank Hersey there are 28 rinks competing in and group schedules with games on Monday and Thursday evenings until the wiiidup on Thursday Dec Another 28 rinks in two other groups play on Tuesday and Friday evenings with the schedule running until Dec 10 Then there are 14 rinks competing in group where games are scheduled for 15 pm Another 14 are entered in group with games at alternate times on Wednesday evenings Anyway leaders in all six groups qualify for playoffs to decide the first series championship which have been arranged to start on Tuesday Dec There will be four nights of play with finals on Friday Dec 17 In the meantime players have been asked to register for the second schedule between Monday Nov 29 and Thursday Dec After the midwinter play there will be third schedule which should provide plenty of local curling activity Special playoffs to settle rinks to represent the club in the various provincial and other championship competitions also have been receiving all due attention Three trophies will be awarded to winners of first schedule playdowns These include the Labatts trophy Consumers Gas and 0K Johnson Travel Agency The ladies curling club which is headed by Lillian Gracey also has been active along with business girls juniors and the popular mixed curling events Playoffs for womens groups ave been arranged for Dec and 10 The club will be celebrating its centennial later in the season with plans calling for an entire week of special events In addi tion the Essa street rink will be hosting three Ontario finals INTERMEDIATE TITLE GAMES AT BARRIE The allOntario intermediate championship competition new series for the Ontario Curling Association will be held at the Barrie curling rink in March The approved dates for the three days of the filial roundrobin of divisional winners are March 17 18and19 It will be single rink competition believe this is for players from 40 to 30 years said Mr Gersey stating he was awaiting confirmation of the codes imposed Iiy the Ontario ministry of labor has affected some 24 rinks which have been declared tinsafc for use in their present state The Bolton Golf and ounli club is reported to be closing its operation because the cost of necessary repairs was considered too Inin to warrant contour ing Others listed in the Ontario curling report are planning to make the needed changes to carry on but few may not bc able to get the work completed for this season There were no Simcoe County rinks mentioned among the 24 affected and all are expected to carry on again LADY CURLERS COMPETE AT ELMVALE note from Elmvale includes reminder that the lady curlers are again ready to compete in local schedules for coveted trophies Joan Rowat skipped the Norm Crane trophy winners during the 197576 season with Ruth Allen guiding the consolation win ners Muriel Townes Jebb Fisher and Audrey Maw were with Joans champions The IGA trophy victors were guided by Bev Steele and III cluded Dorrie Fiegehen Jebb
