last night attended the third in the series of Single Again lectures sponsored by the Family Life Association Mr Gennings stressed the need for person to face reality about his past before he can again become in volved with the present In any loss of relationship whether it is through divorce separation or death person goes through an emotional process or grief process said the former Childrens Aid worker and staff member of Royal Victoria Hospital psychiatric unit The first step of the process is denial he said couple may refuse to admit there is problem Anger follows denial when the person is hit with the reality of the situation He is enraged with his or her partner in marriage or in the death of loved one fate Depression marks the with drawal of the individual he passively accepts the situation He lacks enthusiasm to carry on with life and can seldom be coaxed out of it Mr Gen nings said This is one of the areas where counsellor can be little more than good listener You cant stimulate person in this state As therapist you assault the person by telling him Youll get over it Other people have You just have to respect him Although you cant change their feelings you may help them understand in tellectually where theyre at Then at least they have time on their side Hopefully the person passes from depression into state of genuine acceptance of their misfortune They realize they are still alive Ideally the person achieves sense of hope as the final stage of the grief process Mr Gen nings said The person becomes futureoriented They realize they have lost one relationship but are capable of loving and beingloved again Having gone through these five stages the person can start new relationships Sometimes people get stuck in one stage and this stunts relationship development Some people will become overly suspicious or cynical as they enter into new relation ships This can become self fulfilling prophecy It wont work because they are sure its going to fail This results from lack of trust marital crisis is twice as hard to take because partners feel they have failed They seldom seek intervention In this relationship crisis person needs to talk his problem out Mr Gennings said The ultimate paradox in marital problem is that the per son they should and probably want to talk to is the person they are separating from Next week Summers from
