DECEMBER l7 l952 wanrm At 62 Claims Mi Asks Board Reconsider Because of the contention of that most teachers at the age the Barrie Public School Board Aldermanelect Harris of 62 are too young to retire has been asked to give further cansideratton to the bylaw effecting retirement age of 62 for teachers on the staff Mr Harris who has just com pleted his term of office with the school made the suggestion in letter which he has submitted to the board During nex year he points out he hoped that further consideration would be givcn to certain matters One of these was that there should be larger income to teachers with higher qualifications and in this re gard Mr Harris points out fully realize that this in itself does not make the best teacher but on the average the teachers with the high est qualifications have the best background to be topnotch teach ers and therefore further consider ation should be given to encourage higher recognized standards among the teaching staff Higher compensation should be made for past experience to teach ers joining the staff as results in the past had shown that this was fac tor in retaining the services of some good staff members Referring to the retirement by law Mr Harris says the fact that medical science has improved to as sure life span to the age of 70 for women has raised serious so cial problem It is my personal feeling thrill this bth presented in gmd faith nearly completed The extensions the school or mumrv Mr Hams planned for the relatively near fu is not in the interest of the child adult Most teachers at 62 are too young to retire particularly if theyl are in good health medical cer ticate would be better approach to this problem Certainly this by law deserves reconsideration by this board Difcult Position The school trustee is in difficult position today contends Mr Harris He or she serves without remunl oration because of belief in our educational system On the one hand there is the demand for neces stry accommodation and the con viction that the teachers and staff must be paid an adquate salary This Would ensure the proper edu cation of the children entrusted to the care of the school and the members of their faculties 0n the other hand there is the taxpayer who is preged by an in creaued tax bill Mr Harris ex plains The trustees were actually the PIECE OF CORK arbitrators and tried to do the best possible If it were not for the love of serving worthwhile cause lack of interest vxould ensue but this was not the case More and more of the finest cali bre of citizens come forward each year to offer their services in the interest of children Education is the best investment we can make for the future comments Mr Har r15 Critickm Over Schools Tho criticism which the board now faced Mr Harris continued was basically on the question of cost of the new schools and why they had not been built larger The board built its first two schools 374000 under their estimata and within the contract price They were all proud of them The schools had been built to last for 80 or 100 years at least Considering that it was grow ing town and growing nation it would have been foolish to build them to cover 25 years and not have taken account of the needs for the future In regard to building them larger the general consensus of opinion was that they were being built 00 large as it was Since then the Allandalc extension had been ture stemmed from low projected fiveyear calculation which was made four years ago to present not ual enrolment the spring of 1948 Mr Har ris points out 1300 pupils were at tending public schools Today there are few short of 1800 an in crease of 500 in five years In 1958 lfour years from now the estimated enrolment will be 2230 This is 430 pupils more than attending the pub lic schools in Barrie today In Jan uary 1948 there were 34 class rooms in operation Today there are 51 including home economics and industrial arts and crafts This mites ncr allowance for an increase in populauon of thetown or an an nexation of other areasinto Barrie It is easy to see that am the high school Will be faced with an evernncreasmg pupil load in the near future which has to be looked after in proper mam ner FROM llMous lNGlISH lREE INKS BARRIE EXAMINER Willi OLD BELIEF If an old English superstiticin Which dates back about 300 years is anything to go
