uotes of Derwins Hairdressing School In Barrie No blocks from Earrics Five Points is the establishment which trains students from all areas of Simcoe County and points north south east and west It is unique in that it is the only school of its kind north of Toronto The fact that studean travel as far as 60 miles day to at tend this school is indicative of the esteem in which its instruc tors are held The so students now taking the eightmonth course in cosmetology and hair dressing represent the following towns and villages in Ontario Angus Aliiston Camp Borden Creemore Penctang Kingston Petcrborough Huntsville Owen Sound Wauhaushene Cooks town Elmvale Churchill Stav nor Collingwond Hornepayne Gravonhurst Port McNicoll Lefroy Stroud Holly Brechin and even Barrie OLD SCHOOL The chief Victoria streets She operated at this location for 15 years CHANGING TIMES In those days the average cost of permanent wave was $25 and this was considered cheap permanent Everyone had long hair and it took at least five hours to give heat wave she said Mrs Derwin com mented that today with new cold waves the time element has been cut in half One of the biggest months in Toronto was in March 1924 when everyone was having their locks cropped in keeping with the new trend Mrs Darwin re calls having one customer who kept making an appointment to SALLYS SALLIES Mrs Beatty introduced the speaker them to get into conversation with their cus tomers After they havemas tered the art then they can de cide whether their customers wish to carry on conversation or just relax can anticipate whether woman wishes soi ituda or conversation but that comes from years of practical uperience she quipped One thing she feels very strongly about is the art of massage She was well ground ed in giving scalp treatments and believes in teaching stu dents the same methods The course commences with theory on shop department hy giene sanitation and steriliza tion Much of thls is book work but is later put to
