School of Nursing opened in Toronto today The conference guided by Miss Glenna Rowsell director of the school improvement plan is being attended by the deputy ministers of health and educa tioIlI chairmen of boards of con tro directors of nursing and faculty of participating schools Representatives from Royal Victoria Hospital Barrie in clude Miss Audrey Mapes cin ical instructor in pediatrics ward Mrs Clifford Lockhart head nurse of obstetrical floor Miss Greta Flannery clinical instructor in surgical ward GUIDE FOR SCHOOLS Miss Rowsells role in the conference will be purely inter pretative self evaluation guide for schools of nursing has been prepared by the Canadian Nurses Association and one of Miss Rowseils functions will be to interpret the guide and show how it can be provincial nurses associations ITEMS FROM SURVEY The present program of self tmprovement stems from sur vey sponsored by the Canadian Nurses Association the Pilot Project for the Evaluaton of Schools of Nursing under the direction of Miss Helen Mussallem This study culmin ated in report submitted and approved at the CNA convention in Halifax in 1960 The report of pilot project indicated the need of school improvement program to assist nursing schools to ripgrade their edu cational program recom mendation one of four made in the report and adopted by the membership launched the current selfimprovement pro gram and todays conference is the second hase of this pro gram The xlrst phase was the completion of the CNA ques tionnaire by the participating schools it hospital administrators uotes of Derwins Hairdressing School In Barrie No blocks from Earrics Five Points is the establishment which trains students from all areas of Simcoe County and points north south east and west It is unique in that it is the only school of its kind north of Toronto The fact that studean travel as far as 60 miles day to at tend this school is indicative of the esteem in which its instruc tors are held The so students now taking the eightmonth course in cosmetology and hair dressing represent the following towns and villages in Ontario Angus Aliiston Camp Borden Creemore Penctang Kingston Petcrborough Huntsville Owen Sound Wauhaushene Cooks town Elmvale Churchill Stav nor Collingwond Hornepayne Gravonhurst Port McNicoll Lefroy Stroud Holly Brechin and even Barrie OLD SCHOOL The chief instructor Mrs Mae Derwin who proudly claims to be of the old school opened her first school of hair dressing on Dunlap Street in 1932 She has since operated Miss Rowsell stated that more than 150 Canadian schools of nursing have indicated their willingness to participate in the project Regional conferences will be conducted throughout the autumn and coming winter SECOND STEP These conferences like the one today will interpret the ob jectives of the program to hos pital and health officials and assist instructors of schoolsof nursing in evaluating their edu catonal program through the use of the selfeva1uation guide which was developed by the CNA as the second step in this program An immediate purpose of the selfevaluation guide is to as sist schools in identifying the areas in which irnprovemeat is desirable and practical and where assistance is required Miss Rowsell indicated that this phase of the program would be completed by May 1982 Thornton WI Cater To Banquet For District Marcel of Fifth Avenue She remembers her first customer as if it was yes terday was so nervous didnt think could go through with it said Mrs Dcrwin smiling But the woman lik ed my work so well she asked for me the next timeshe came to the shop This was all needed to muster my sclfcon fidence In 1915 Mrs Darwin moved to Toronto where she opened her own beauty salon on the comer of Queen and Victoria streets She operated at this location for 15 years CHANGING TIMES In those days the average cost of permanent wave was $25 and this was considered cheap permanent Everyone had long hair and it took at least five hours to give heat wave she said Mrs Derwin com mented that today with new cold waves the time element has been cut in half One of the biggest months in Toronto was in March 1924 when everyone was having their locks cropped in keeping with the new trend Mrs Darwin re calls having one customer who kept making an appointment to SALLYS SALLIES Mrs Beatty introduced the speaker Mrs Ward Goodfellow of Barrie She spoke of the purpose of resolutions and the good that can be done if mem bers endeavor to keep them She told members that the wording and the resolution had to pass first at branch level and musr be signed by the re solutions convener and the president This had to pass at each level and signed until it finally reaches the dominion eve Mrs Johnson conducted contest wonby Mrs Mei Cun ningham short humorous skit was enacted by several of the members on resolving to tell the tnith Miss Myrna Spencer presented piano solo Mrs Johnson thanked the speaker and looked better Of course kept my end of the bargain and had to cut my own locks Mrs Derwin opened her school for training because of general interest she wanted to pass along her knowledge to others She finds it very satis fying to watch student pro grossing She feels one of the most im portant points of hairdressing is learning to give good sham poo Itrelaxes the customer and many women have their hair done not only to be well groomed but to enjoy the rev laxatlon PRACTICAL EXPERENCE Mrs Derwin encourages her students to keep their minds on their work while learning and doesnt encourage them to get into conversation with their cus tomers After they havemas tered the art then they can de cide whether their customers wish to carry on conversation or just relax can anticipate whether woman wishes soi ituda or conversation but that comes from years of practical uperience she quipped One thing she feels very strongly about is the art of massage She was well ground ed in giving scalp treatments and believes in teaching stu dents the same methods The course commences with theory on shop department hy giene sanitation and steriliza tion Much of thls is book work but is later put to practical use says Miss Lillian Eskilson who is graduate of Darwins Bair dressing School and has been an instructor for three years Students then are taught the art of manicuring facials fin gerwaving
