Barrie Branch Ontario Departinth oi Agricul ture and associated Vservica Not only are hay and pasture our most valuable crops and all too often our most neglected crops particularly pasture but suitable combination of grass and clover is our most effective and most profitable means of making use of large areas of both second class and marginal or problem soils We should always keep in mind that in North Sirncoe less than onethird of our tiliable farm acreage can be classed as good or first class land Another third may be termed second class land or land that may be made reasonably productive with nor mal good farming practices An other third of our tiunble farm land represents problem fields and sometimes problem farms where substantial corrective measures and carefully selected cropping practices are necessary Pasture wmrr Ann oun nwon raoannnis HAY Pasrunn mnovmmnrsr Some fifty experienccd farm ers cooperated in this study Thirtyfour of this group sent in formal survey form listing their major problems on their particular forms in order of im portance Many found lock of fer tility the major factor others found poor drainage of most im portance and others listed lack of time first and so on down the list The first six factors given below were considered import ant limitations on obout halt the farms reported on whereas the last four problems listed were important on only few farms The list given is arranged in or der of the average importanco given to each factor as follows Low fertility or lack of plant food Poor drain ge Winterin of elovers Close grazing of clovers in August and September Lack of lime or calcium Difficulty of getting catch Weed infestation particul ly of pastures Lack of soil moisture in san dy and gravelly areas Weed trees on pastures 10 on much stone for reseeding WHAT DO OUR CGOPERATORS RECOMIIEEND AS PRACTICAL METHODS OF CORREGHNG THESE PROBLEMS At the top of the list for most farms was general recom rncndation to build up and main tain soil fertility by various means but mainly by practi BUILDING PRODUCTSFOR ANY FARMBlilLDlNG if we are to attain any satisfac tory level of production at ran sonoble ost in recognition of the high oentage of our crop land that needs chreful attention our may or attention has been directed to Wing to find the answer to as many of our soil and crop prob lems as possible in reporting our hay and pos ture work this year we have not attempted to give detailed farmtofarm report of the vari ous HayPasture and Fertility Buildup Tests but instead have made survey through our co operators of recent years of major problems and recommend ations as to the most effective steps in haypasture improve ment We think that the observations and opinions of our eooperntuls most of whom have studied this problem for good many years should be the most valuable kind of information we can pass on to all the members and other interested in this chort sum mary of this survey follows Survey cal combination of barnyard manure supplemented by com mercial fertilizer according to the needs of the crop to be grown and as recommended by the soil test On some forms Agricultur al Limestone was listed as must and on others improved drainage was first and essen tial step good many stressed the im portance of selecting grasses and clovcrs to suit the field to be seeded and the majority Suggest ed various ways of avoiding graz ing clovers in late August and September While these were the recommendations most frequent ly stressed by our cooperators there were many other ideas listed and as many of them may be important on certain farms we are giving complete list of the various suggestions as fol 0W5 Maintain or build up fertility dVarious methods were suggest Top dress real need on problem soils Reed Canary Grass is our most redi nblc grass for wet areas and is quite palatable ifthe soil has lots of minerals Avoid mung clover In late August and September litany suggestions were offer ed as to how this might be done Pasture grass fields at this time onficlds that are to be broken up I7 Plan to seed in field or two of Rye or Rape in midsummer for early and late fall pas ture Bye can also be count ed on for early spring pas ture if needed to Some found that seeding White Blossom Sweet Clover with grain crops no suitable fields provided three monthi good pasture after harvest Harvest grain fields not aceti ed down as early as possible tili irrnnediately and seed oats for early fall posture in some years enough cats have been shelled in the field to give good cover without special seeding it In favourable seasons with adequate rainfall top dress ing gross pastures in July with high Nitrogen fertiliz er will often double August and Septemberparture growth Top dressing early with Phosphated manure if available will usually do an even better job Avoid overgrazlng Cloverspnd grasses canoniw produce well if allowed to retain reasonable proportion of leaf growth or if given an opportun ity to recover mdmly Suggestions offered in this com ncctiou were as follows fladsn Winsomeof hay and pasture so that in years of good spring growth field or two can be out early for grass silage and be ready to meet later pasture needs In the springbf the year there is multiplicity of jobs that mustbe Be it repairs to any buildinan barley at bus per acre was considered plenty of seed grain for nurse crop Several have found that for land of low fertility seeding the grain at it spacing gives them much better catch of eion and grasses and usually as much or more grain per am Some suggested that they had got better catches from broadcasting the fertilizer when seeding down than when drilling the fertilizer ln morn deeply with the need grain General recommendation in Some suggest better results may be obtained by clipping and posturing moderale the irst season rather than harvesting grain orop On long term establishd recommand spray ing or mechanical clearing by bulldozer or other means to remove weed trees such as thorn apple choke cherry willow alder etc Recommendations are con flicting as to stone clearance for pasture improvement The answer seems to depend on the quality of the land the location of the field in question and the cost of the clearing operation Quite number have greatly improv ed and enlarged results and that the limitation or problems of each field have to be given careful attention The North Simcoe cooperators reporting program in this work had been carrying on haypasture improvement for three to ten years or more or an average of over six years Cooperators on first class land reported an increase of from 20 to 50 per cent in haypasture pro duction Cooperators working on prob lem fields reported an increase of 50 to 100 per cent or higher in several cases All cooperatnra thought that their investment of time and man ey particularly in pasture im provement profitable as well as
