Barrie Branch Ontario Departinth oi Agricul ture and associated Vservica Not only are hay and pasture our most valuable crops and all too often our most neglected crops particularly pasture but suitable combination of grass and clover is our most effective and most profitable means of making use of large areas of both second class and marginal or problem soils We should always keep in mind that in North Sirncoe less than onethird of our tiliable farm acreage can be classed as good or first class land Another third may be termed second class land or land that may be made reasonably productive with nor mal good farming practices An other third of our tiunble farm land represents problem fields and sometimes problem farms where substantial corrective measures and carefully survey form listing their major problems on their particular forms in order of im portance Many found lock of fer tility the major factor others found poor drainage of most im portance and others listed lack of time first and so on down the list The first six factors given below were considered import ant limitations on obout halt the farms reported on whereas the last four problems listed to build up and main tain soil fertility by various means but mainly by practi BUILDING PRODUCTSFOR ANY FARMBlilLDlNG if we are to attain any satisfac tory level of production at ran sonoble ost in recognition of the high oentage of our crop land that needs chreful attention our may or attention has been directed to Wing to find the answer to as many of our soil and crop prob lems as possible in reporting our hay and pos ture work this year we have not attempted to give detailed farmtofarm report of the vari ous HayPasture and Fertility Buildup Tests but instead have made survey through our co operators of recent years of major problems and recommend ations as to the most effective steps in haypasture improve ment We think that the observations and opinions of our eooperntuls most of whom have studied this problem for good many years should be the most valuable kind of information we can pass on to all the members and other interested in this chort sum mary of this survey follows
