The bill would have had the effect of making a corporation which has works on the highway bear the whole cost of moving the same when changes are being mads on the highway. At present the cost is born:s in equal proportions by the highwoy authorities and the op-- erating corporation, but the cost does inot. include the replacement or removal =ct appliances or works. nor the cost of lany material or supplies, nor any other expenseo or loss occasioned to the op-- | orating corporation. | Sincs the introduction of the bill, l& good many pole--line companies are | said to hove become greatly excercisad over it. ' When it was called for sscand reading .yesteraay. Hon. William Finlayson, .Ck.)alrma.n of the Municipal Law Com-- | mittee, expressed th> cpinion,. from legal inquiries that had been made into the | sitgat;:n. that it would not gat very far, | an r. Elliott, its sponsor, promptly | withdrew it. P pty Questionnaire Will Be Sent to the Municipalities Affected A bill which was brought before the Municipal Law Committse of the Legis-- lature yvestorday by F. W. Elliott (Lib-- 'e;'al.rlort.x Bruce) asking the authority |for small towns to reduce the number of | theii Councillors from six to four was |laid over indefinitely until a question-- 'naire can be sent to all municipalities 'affected to determine their views. | -- This action was taken on the sugges-- ition of Dr. Paul Poisson (Conservative, | North Essex), in spite of the fact that the majority of committee members felt Ithat the average Council in a small mu-- :nicipaxity is tooa large and unwieldy. | ~Mr. Elliott's argument in support of his bill was that the changs would not affect representation on the Council, |and that the cost of government would 'be cut down, inasmuch as most mu-- | nicipalities pay their Councils. Hon. William Finlayson, Minister of !Lands and Forests, was again selected as Chairman of the committee.
