The Last Tribute of Respect Paid to His Remains
PARRY SOUND, May 20 - On Saturday evening, the 17th inst., the steamer Northern Belle arrived from Collingwood with the remains of Mr. J. C. Miller, ex-M. P. P. for Muskoka and Parry Sound, who died at Colton, Southern California, on the second day of April. Early on Sunday morning the friends of teh deceased began to arrive - persons of every creed and shade of politics, and from many miles distant. The Rev. Mr. Casson, of Markdale, (who was there by a special request of the deceased) conducted the ceremonies. He read the ninetieth Psalm, and addressed the large assemblage in a brief and truthful eulogy on the deceased's many treats of goodness, his free and fearless manner of recognizing right, his determined character, his pronounced principles, his appreciation of honesty and worth, and his industrious habit and active life, his persevering enterprise, his indomitable courage, his buoyant and hopeful spirit while battling with ill health and the burdens and care of business, his shrewdness and courage, which often changed what seemed to be a disaster into a successful venture, his keen judgment of character, his warm and unswerving friendship, when he found a friend worthy of his confidence and esteem. He then spoke of the closing scenes of his busy life, passing away in a quiet and peaceful rest, commending his spirit to God who gave it and in hope of a glorious resurrection through Jesus Christ our Lord and Saviour.
After a short, prayer, at ten minutes to three p.m., the coffin was borne to the hearse, and the procession moved off to the cemetery in the following order: - The Parry Sound Brass Band, playing the Dead March. Immediately preceeding the hearse where the attending physician and officiating clergyman, Dr. Bridgiand, of Bracebridge, and the Rev. Mr. Casson, of Markdale; the hearse; and the pall-bearers, namely: - A. P. Cockburn, M. P., D. F. Macdonald, John T. Harvie, George Paget, Thos. R. Caton, Thomas Myers, J. S. Rogerson, Frank Strain. Next came the chief mourners, including Mr. J. B. Miller, only son of the deceased; Mr. S. B. Purvis and Mr. John Purvis, nephews of deceased; also Mr. W. H. Pratt. Following the chief mourners came about two hundred of the Parry sound Lumber Company's employees; immediately after them the Reeves and Corporations of the townships of McDougall, Foley, McKellar and Humphrey; then followed the friends, visitors and delegates from all parts of the district.
