in town on saturday garth was an important cog in the operation of the lions ieewee hockey league one year ago- important step jae iiouguam intermediate softball club has taken an important step forward this summer in attempting to organize a minor league setip whereby utuns talent will be available when some of the seasoned veterans decide to hang up their spikes and call it quits down through the year the name brougham has become quite significant in intermediate softball circles and the mainstays on the club hope to keep the name in the spotlight by starting an organized training pro gram the response has been more than gratifying and close to fifty young boys have signified their interest in catching a position on one of the teams this summer the oub3 will play only exhibition contests but it is hoped they will fit into an organized group next year in spile of their lack of experience three clubs the rnntams midgets andjuveniles have been entered into 6asaj competition and although they may be knocked out in the first round it is felt that the practice will be well worth the expense involved the promoters of this minor organization are quite enthusi astic already they feel they have discovered much hidden talent- and with a little practice and assistance hope to produce future softball stars brougham like a number of teams in the markham league have players in their lineup who will be wanting to hang em up in the near future it is hoped how ever that by this time new talent will be available to ni the gap the new minor league program is certainly a step in the right direction a move that will certainly payoff in seasons to come a possible explanation this week we received a letter from a mr anonymous of toronto a spectator at the brooklinstouffville girls softball on wednesday evening of last week the neutral bystander was rather critical of the plate officiating stating that in his opinion it was umpired very poorly your sports editor attended the game a marathon contest that took almost three hours to complete rather than criticize the officiating we would tend to be sympathetic with the plate official anyone standing behind the plate for three solid hours of girls softball with a score resembling a basketball content might be inclined to speed up proceedings certainly the um piring could not be blamed for the brooklin loss the figures speak for themselves stouffviile batters clouted 21 safehits and the opposition committed 10 errors which pretty well tells the story the writer suggested that the local team would do well to employ an official from an umpires association from a stand point of expense the girls team has enough trouble meeting the cost of the lights balls hats etc without paying a fee plus transportation for an outside mnp umpire len buckland has both an oba and an oasa card which should certainly be adequate for the type of ball displayed at this particular game local umpires are not easily found and stouffviile is fortunate to have a man on whom they can rely like mr anonymous 1 too have had my share of plate officiating and for that reason i am never too quick to criticize mr buckland 13 not only dependable but performs his duties without any request for remuneration the least we can give him is a thank you musselmans lake five miles north of stouffviile lies a picturesque body of water known as musselmans lake during the week the entire area is strangely quiet only the laughter of children playing on the sandy beach or the put put of a distant motor boat disturbs the silence silhouetted against the sky a patient flshermatfi dangles his line into the lakes unexplored depths in hopes tlfat fie might nab a prize pike or bass yes musselmans lake is a peaceful place during the week on saturday and sunday however the resort centre is transformed into a hive of bustling humanity the beaches are crowded with bathers dozens of motor boats skim over the surface water skiers provide aquatic thrill for shoreline spectators and the spacious picnic grounds provide ampio room for hundreds musselmans lake is a sportsmans paradise for the outdoor man theres fishing boating swimming water skiing or just plain relaxing in the sun musselmans lake has down through the years become a favourite haunt for the allsummer cottager the twoweek vacationer or the
