in getting the plans for the actual opening of the market underway he mentioned the gratitude which the people who had wor ked for the market felt to mrs grandy owner of the land on which the market is situated for coming to the aid of the committee when things looked the least promising mr rodd introduced dr dymond newly elected mla for the rural on tario riding who officially op ened the market dr dymond told the group that he had al ways known the cooperative movement that away back in his boyhood in scotland his family had done their purchas ing in the cooperative stores and he felt that there was in the cooperative way of life the answer for many of our agri cultural problems in his inter- esting and friendly manner the speaker talked for a few min utes enjoying his first official duty as he put it and then offi cially declared the market open mr h arbuckle assistant- secretary in the ontario feder ation of agriculture was on hand to wish the market suc cess the fanners are ontario are not expected to be troublesome this year but already reports are being received of heavy infestations of aphids or plant lice in grain crops according to w m cockbum agricultural representative at newmarket outbreaks of serious propor tions have been reported in durham county its well as kent and essex in western ontario where 500 acres have been sprayed by aeroplane all farmers are advised to examine their grain crops care fully right away for these blood suckeis which take the juices from the plants and create an unthrifty appearance in the crop the somewhat yellowed crop might easily be thought to be due to wet soil conditions malathion either as a spray or dust has given excellent control and distributors have been alerted by the department agriculture of the possibility of a heavy demand for malathion preparations ifor spraying on dusting the cases so far re ported to mr oockburn are in the stouffvillcimarkbam area and detailed control measures are prohibited noxious weed since there are only five weeds in canada dangerous enough to be included in this classifi cation it is quite evident that field bindweed must be watch ed for and destroyed immedi ately any trace is found field bindweed spreads like a cancer twining around and over all other plants choking and smothering them to death seeds or root stock will pro duce new plants with seeds germinating after being buried in the soil for as long as thirty years according to the field crops branch of the ontario depart ment of agriculture field bindweed can be controlled but it calls for a continuous at tack the top growth of twin ing slender stems narrow ar row shaped leaves and white or pink trumpet shaped blooms is killed by spraying with 24d at 8 to 1g ounces of 24d acid per acre new growth comes up from the roots however so the spray must be repeated until the roots also are killed a black fallow cultivated ev ery 10 or 12 days for two grow ing seasons will clean out most of even a severe infestation a combination of cultivation and smother crops will weaken it for small areas soil sterilants such as sodium chlorate at 6 lbs per square rod borax at 10 to 12 lbs per acre omtj at vt lb in 3 gallons of water per square rod or even common salt applied in killing quanti ties may be the quickest and most effective method of eradi cating this weed 48 acres of
