there was no response from the audience finally a man rose and stated that he was glad that he had come to the meet ing that he now understood the situation and that he was satisfied that the company was entitled to the increased rate once the ice was broken there were other similar comments and the chairman suggested that if someone among the non- shareholders would make a motion of confidence in the company it would be possible to ascertain the mind of the meeting mr curtis moved seconded by mr madill that this meet ing of subscribers of the bs telephone co ltd hereby ex presses our confidence in the methods and policy by which the business of the said com pany is being conducted when the chairman called for a show of hands in favor of the motion hands went up the picture is okay the hall the chair man announced that if any of those who had signed the peti tion demanding a return to the old rates still desired to have their telephone removed they must write a letter repeating their request otherwise service would be continued as the di rectors would not accept any mass order to remove tele phones following this meeting the stouffville tribune published an editorial that was very help ful the sum of the editorial was that up to that time the tribune had taken no side in the controversy and that now that the company had laid all their cards on the table the tribune was satisfied that the increase in rates was a neces sity there were five men who had been leaders in the agitation who did not accept our invita tion to attend the annual mee ting these men published in the tribune an open letter ad- dresesed to the directors of our company in this letter they renewed their attack and gave to us a solemn warning that there would be serious trou ble if we persisted in collect ing the new rates to this open letter we replied in another open letter in which we inform ed the five malcontents and the public that we intended to remove their telephones unless they requested that they be left in their houses then we sent our line superintendent to call on the five men carry ing with him a marked cheque drawn in favor of each man re paying the rent that had been paid in adavnee and for which he had not received service mr miller was instructed to tender the cheque and to ask for a re ceipt before he touched the telephone not one of the men cillowed the telephone be re moved each man declared that since the rent was paid to may the 1st it might as well re main until the date of the more than three hundred sub scribers who had signed the ul timatum only one had his phone taken out his reason being that a markham pick ering telephone would be of more service to him during the spring of that year the writer was during several weeks a patient in to ronto general hospital during part of his period in the hospi tal he had as a roommate a youth whose home was in west gwillimbury one day the boys family came to visit him and his sister made it her business to relate every item of news from home and among other it ems she told him that the schombcrg telephone compa ny was increasing its rates and that many telephones were go ing to be ordered out her father interrupted to say that the phones would not be ordered out that it would be like it was down at stouft- ville where three hundred telephones had been ordered out if the telephone company did not return to the old rates but that following a series of letters from the president of the company only one tele phone had been taken out at that point the daughter and her father engaged in an argument concerning the local ity of the company the father maintained that it was the stouffville company while his daughter declared that she read all the letters and she was certain that they were all dat ed from unionville finally i interrupted the argument and aid if you really would like local and personal happenings notice e a grubin ro optome trist will be at his office in
