thirty subscribers in the village of stouffville and eighty subscrib ers in the rural area a total of 110 subscribers when in the early spring of that year we commenced the work of recon structing the line to gormley we probably did not have more than 70 telephones outside of stouffville yet we were erect ing a pole line that eventually carried four tenpin crossarms when the new poles began to rise along the townline and pasersby compared the sturdy pole with crossarms with the poles that were about to be taken down there was an opin ion freely expressed that the directors of the b s tel co had taken leave of their senses two men who were well known and whose opinions carried weight with their fellow citi zens were discussing the ex traordinary optimism of the directors of the company one man inquired whether his com panion was a shoreholder the reply was thank the lord i am not erelong additional crossarms had to be erected on the poles then another brand of criticism was heard it was said that if we had been wise we wojuld not have erected such a light line in the first place the extra cost to the com pany of the reconstruction of the main pole lead was not so great as appeared on the sur face the material was not scrapped the wire was easily transferred to the crossarms and the poles sideblocks and insulators were used in new construction elsewhere the only extra cost was the labor involved and that was charge able to necessary expense in starting a new enterprise that had to prove its worth as it progressed this expense was unavoidable- with the erection of the trunk line to gormley we ab andoned the switching phone at gormley the entire rural section was subdivided into se veral partylines the 50- line switchboard was installed and miss belle ratcliff became our first operator when we com pared the improved service with the service we had been giving or trying to give our selfesteem rase we were proud of our achievement however other difficulties developed which were the re sult of our inexperience one partyline developed a myster ious trouble complaints were constantly being received that rings were very indistinct fre quently it was impossible to raise central or even phones of near neighbors inquiries re pealed the fact that there was one subscriber who rarely had trouble he assured us that the trouble could not be in his phone as its rings were always loud and clear mickie moore had gone away from stouffville there was a young englishman living in stouffville who had been work ing for a farmer but having completed his contract with the farmer was living in stou ffville learning that this man had been an electrician in the british navy and had had tele phone experience he was re quested to investigate our trou ble herbert smith made mi nute inquiry concerning the myptoms of our trouble and when he learned that there was one telephone on that particu lar lino which rarely gave any trouble his suspicion was ar oused he inquired whether that telephone was of the same manufacture as were the other instruments on the line it wvs not it was a second hand telephone that had been picked up somewhere smith went to inspect this phone he found the offender it was equipped with a iooo ohm rin c while all the other phones had 20006hm ringers the low er resistance and robbed the higher resistance instruments and silenced them herbert smith was seeking employment we were in need of some person who had exper ience so we engaged him ex perimentally for three months this was extended to one year at a salary of sg3q for the year jic remained with us until the fall of 1016 one of the most persistent and annoying troubles arose out of the problem of giving nght service when we com menced business in august 1901 we gave night service to rural subscribers and to village lines which served doctors or veter inary surgeons this service was given by simply leaving the big rural partyline and also lines serving medical men connected during the night if any person required a medi cal man he could be called di rectly by the person requiring cortinued oa page 3 car takes a tumble while unloading 10000 in cash and cheques
