competition the annual ontario county 500 bushel potato club ban- ouet was held in zephyr com munity hall on tuesday nov 23rd a large gathering of po tato growers and their friends were present mr r e goodin potato fieldman for the province of ontario spoke briefly on the potato situation howard har per who introduced the guest speaker discussed the work of the ontario potato growers association and urged the cou nty growers to get behind this association mr heber irwin director of the provincial potato growers outlined the organization of this association a group of growers in the shelburne wednesday nov i7th despite his many years mr brownsberger is in very good health he does his own house work and gardening and when his cellar became flooded with water a couple of years ago he baled all the water out by him self the celebrated resident was born at ringwood and oper ated as a harnessmaker stouffville at an early age he has been living in the west for the past fortyeight years his birthday was celebrated quietly at home receiving guests and members of his fa mily reeve ogden opposed by councillor daniels heifer attacks hired man twentysix year old peter derek a hired man on the ross winterstein farm 6th conces sion of whitchurch narrowly escaped death on tuesday af ternoon when a holstein heifer went wild and pinned the young man against the stable wall dr fj button of stouffville treated the injured youth for shock and a possible fractured skull the accident occurred imme diately after the horns had been removed from the heifers head derek was removing the ropes from the animal when it suddenly charged knocking him unconscious the youth is a native of holland and has been working on the winter stein farm for nearly two years he was removed to hospital for xray treatment and obser vation dreary christmas for milliken famliy as father stricken a dreary christmas appears imminent for mr and mrs al fred smith and family of birch- mount road near milliken about one year ago mr smith a veteran of world war ii contracted polio and was to tally paralyzed although he made a remarkable recovery from this disease his right arm remains useless since that time he has had pneumonia twice and now he has been stricken with leukemia a drea ded blood disease the family must now de pend on a war veterans allow ance and a monthly family al lowance for a meagre existence mr and mrs smith have 3 children patsy 14 david 12 and stephen 5 the two boys attend public school at the cor ner of birehmount road and finch ave while the daughter attends a school for the deaf at belleville when mr smith purchased his five acres of land he plan ned to build a house on the property he has since been forced to sell two acres along with the family car and tv set they are lemasurier of markham township announced on tuesday night at a meet ing of the markham twp pro perty owners association that a big water strike had been made on the harold boyington property west of don mills road and south of no 7 high way the well is expected to produce one million gallons of water per day a sufficient quantity to supply 10000 per sons the quality of the water is reported to be very good mrs kathleen james and mr archie little members of the water and sanitation committee for the township have been working on the project for many months the tests have been carried out by elgin wagg at the annual nomination meeting on friday evening a e weldon was given an accla mation for his return to the public utilities commission and there was an acclamation for public school trustees mrs mary smith len wilkes and wm malloy being returned l e oneill was also acclaimed for cemetery commissioner reeve ogden in addressing the ratepayers told of the stea dy growth of the local planing mill could not ob tain a deed for several acres of property purchased just south of the new high school mr og den explained that the deed was ready for the new owner just as soon as the subdivision plan was provided as had been agreed to councillor milt burk spoke chiefly of road matters stating that the budget had been over spent by 2600 but that the dept had cut the budget from 9000 to 8000 he condemned the highways dept for unnec essary sanding on main st mr burk said that winter snow removal last year was small costing only s17s00 a total of had been spent on grading and 2000 for oil s1s30 was spent on sidewalks and 102637 on culverts he said that as regards to police he fa vored the opp but on a bet ter financial contract one man mr burk said was definitely not enough sewers he added were also needed and he would favor their installation as soon as council felt that the town was in a financial position to proceed councillor daniels said that he favored the onetime reeve and r w masters in ward ii donald deacon won an acclamation for a council seat while in ward iii coun cillor archie littles seat is being contested by clifford king mondays annua nomination meeting held in the buttonville hall this year for the first time drew a comparatively good crowd reeve alf lemasurier in his report to the ratepayers stated that ho was well aware that taxes were increasing and this condition would continue as long as more and more services were demanded he comment ed that markham twp was leaping the results of a lack of planning and foresight he pointed out that much addi tional money had to be spent to complete the municipal buijd- ing started by a previous coun cil mr lemasurier dealt with the problem of obtaining in dustry and water for markham he promised continued sound and businesslike administra tion and as a parting comment said that he believed the onta rio government should abolish county councils deputyreeve w i clarke dealt principally with road matters having headed that de partment in council he said that with 85 of the assess ment taken away by the metro area the maintenance of coun ty roads by the remaining 15 was a big problem he said that markham had laid dust layer on one hundred miles of town ship road and given asphalt surface treatment to 00 miles mr clarke said that the gov ernment had pared markhams road budget from s154000 to 143000 he commented that be cause of this reduction part of the gravel program had to be curtailed councillor archie little said that he believed the new ward system adopted this year would prove quite satisfactory and commented briefly on his work with the water plumbing and fire committees councillor art lennie who is coming before the people for a fourth term this time as deputyreeve said that the do minion government was pour ing 572000 into markham township a year in baby bonus and old age pension and be lieved the provincial govern ment should come up with equal help for education councillor kathleen james told the gathering that there was no immediate prospect for water at this time she said that seven tests had been un successful mrs james also re viewed the assessment prob lem and the work of preparing for full measured assessment chas hooper former reeve who is opposing mr lemasu rier told the ratepayers that last years election proceedings were a
