proceeding west on the highway from his home to pickering when a southbound truck owned and driven by thomas nakladvzuk proceed ing south on the townhne col lided with the right side of his car the impact tore the entire right side out of the booth lclmodei car the right front door was hurled into the south ditch of the highway some distance west of the acci dent scene and the car was turned completely around coming- to resl with the left rear wheel touching the south edge of the pavement the right from wheel in the south ditch the truck spun around to the west and came to rest in a northwesterly position al most blocking the north half of tlie pavement its load of plastering supplies planks mortar mixing equipment etc was hurled off by the impact and landed on the gravel road surrounding the drowning in ptickrin park pond picker ing township of eightyearold josephine marie de groot of kinsale on sunday lithe 20 the verdict was accompanied by a rider to the effect that the department of health be re quested to inspect the pond dr p a cuddy of whitby presided at the inquest which was held in the pickering dis trict public school r d hum phreys qc of oshawa assist ed the coroner in the adduc tion of evidence one of the witnesses called was joseph de groot father of the dead child mr de groot said that on sunday afternoon june 20 he had visited the swimming pond ih pickering park accompanied by his wife and nine children all but mrs de groot and the eldest son john had gone swimming and it was not until they emerged from the water and congregat ed at a picnic table that it was noticed that josephine was missing a search was started in the adjoining park and in the pond and terminated when john 15 discovered the body of his sister lying on the bot tom of the pond in several feet of water mr de groot claimed that mud stirred up by the many people who had been using the pond made it almost impossi ble to see anything in the wa ter he added that on a prev ious visit to the pond a fence had been used to prevent young children from venturing into deep water but on the day of the accident no such fence was erected john de groot corroborated his fathers evidence and went on to say that there were weeds on the pond bottom and on the surface of the water he added that the last time he saw his sister josephine she was play ing with a floating fence post in the water describing the finding of his sister john said that he could not see her under the water but had felt her with his foot hartmtit schmid 21 of whitby who was present at the time
