before mark- ham township council on mon day afternoon to ask that council pass on to the ontario municipal board a bylaw amendment which would allow their new building to be erected 300 ft back of yonge st rather than 250 ft as at present the amendment was asked for by the thornhill police village trus tees and has been in the hands of markham council for several months the trustees contend that markham has no alternative than to pass it on to the municipal board the original zoning bylaw setting out a distance of 250 ft from yonge st for commercial proper ty is still in the hands of the municipal board awaiting a hear ing this hearing was set for feb 6th according to clerk chas hoover but time was not suffici ent for notifying the interested parties and no new date has been set mr wain who acted as spokes man for the farmers stated that moving their new site back an extra fifty feet was quite satis factory with thornhill and he could not see why anyone should object mr meldrum of elgin st rate payers was also present and spoke against allowing the bylaw to be amended he contended that a traffic hazard would be created he said that he failed to see how tne new market could be a financial success mr meldrum drew the ire of mr fred wicks of the federation of agriculture when he contended that the place might be used for dances and the elgin st residents didnt want that type of people here mr wicks said that his group fully supported the new market plan and furthermore he liked to go to dance and didnt like to be spoken of as that type of people mr palmer from king said that the elgin st people themselves were divided in their objections and refuted the charge that there would be any traffic hazard the highway department doesnt think so he said he continued to say that the new market would be a definite benefit to thornhill who were being given an opportunity not often offered the market is going up any way and i tliink its too bad the elgin st people cant
