problems require much time of inspectors the two months of may and june have been occupied by the windup of the school health ser vices for the spring readjustment of the field areas for staff coverage the addition of another public health nurse to the start and the rapid seasonal increase in sanita tion problems sanitation llie sanitary inspectors report ed inspections on 69 defective sep tic tanks in the health unit during the last two months 37 defective septic tanks in june and 32 defec tive septic tanks in may since the beginning of the year 109 defective septic tanks have been inspected septic tank inspections have taken up a tremendous amount of the inspectors time during recent weeks when there is a general in crease in the demands on the inspectors in various other fields the actual number of defective septic tanks in the health unit is of course much larger than the figures indicate above since many do not come to the attention of the health unit until conditions are so bad that the owner and the neigh bours patience are exhausted the health unit has solicited co operation from various municipal councils regarding adoption of appropriate bylaws to regulate the proper installation of septic tanks and it is hoped that such steps will over a few years assist to alleviate and prevent septic tank problems in the health unit area there were 43 inspections of food handling establishments during may and 53 inspections of food handling establishments during june during the first half of the year there have been 309 inspec tions of eating establishments a steady improvement is noticeable in conditions in restaurants and lunch counters in the health unit up to the present time preschool health during may and june some of the larger schools in the health unit conducted preschool registra tion of the beginners for next september classes the public health nurses cooperated with the school authorities in interviewing the parents of the beginners to acquaint the parents with the importance of good health when beginning school parents are urged to have their school begin ners examined by their family were a great many more cases of mumps not reported however parents teachers and physicians are now reporting more regularly the cases of communicable disease coming to their attention and the preventive services of the health unit are being used to better advantage apart from mumps there has not be any abnormal outbreak of com municable disease during recent weeks staff an additional
