the making of plans for extension of services in the coming vear have highlighted activities of the york county health unit during last month with melting snow and spring rains formerly dormant problems in waste and sewage disposal are appearing throughout both the rural and builtup communities in the health lnit because of exces sive building on small sized lots the solving of private sewage dis posal problems is exceedingly difficult where new building is now being carried out problems are becoming less frequent as more builders and home owners take advantage of the available assistance and advice from the health unit before installing pri vate sewage disposal systems a detailed report of a sanitary survey of the village of markham was presented to the markham village council this survey was made jointly by the stair of the york county health unit and the provincial department of health in the summer of 151 it involved an investigation of all premises private or commercial in mark ham village with respect to water supply and waste disposal includ ing sanitary waste and garbage also included in the report is a large scale map showing the loca tion of each well privy septic tank and cesspool in the village the health unit endorsed the recommendations made bv the provincial department of health and ibased on this survey urging markham village to take steps as soon as possible to obtain engineering plans for a sewage disposal system with provision for installation ot sewers in that part of the village most urgently re quiring sewers to provide for con nection of all remaining premises to the village water system and to arrange tor garbage collection services tor the entire village food sanitation continuing stringent adminis tration of food handling regula tions for restaurants and lunch counters is under way it is felt that move than ample- time has been allowed the operators of food handling establishments to meet the minimum requirements for equipment and operating tech niques plans are also under wav for chest xrays for all food hand lers employed in restaurants lunchcounters and dairies child health centres the continuing good attendance at the various local child health centres is shown by an average attendance of 20 infants and pre school children at the child health centres held during march im munization is presently provided to approximately half of the child health centres this spring and will be offered in the remaining centres in the coming fall communicable diseases a notable law incidence of re
