beginning to realize that equal educational opportun ities for students in the rural dis tricts as compared with opportun ities afforded students in the urban centres were taxing the ability of the former to provide as a result council passed a resolution to con sider the advisability of approach ing the provincial government of ontario with the need of the government assuming the respon sibility of education throughout the province and thus avoid the numerous difficulties confronting the various municipalities the metropolitan street railway co began to feel the competition from motor buses running along the same route northward on yonge street there was some talk of it having to cease operating as this line was vital to the needs of thousands of people in the county the county council passed a resolution strongly urging the board of control of the city of toronto to assure the continuance of this means of transportation and another resolution requesting the provincial government to cancel the license of the toronto trans portation commission to prevent the commission from competing by means of motor buses with the service offered by the metropolitan canada be requested that in any plans for the relief of the unemployed no part of the cost of such relief be passed back to the municipalities and that the govern ment le urged to make a thorough investigation into economic con ditions in the country with a view of dissolving combines and inter locking directorates so that the present day methods of organized capital in closing down competing industries be checked in this year 1931 county coun cil passed a resolution expressing disapproval at the alarming in crease in the cost of secondary school education the committee on education reported at the december session that costs could be decreased by cutting teachers salaries 25 per cent on salaries over 3000 and 15 per cent under 3000 by refraining from any further building for the next few years and by adopting a double- shift schedule in schools which wore overcrowded these recom mendations were adopted for the past three years the county council had decreased the costs of municipal service and administration in an effort to relieve the taxpayers during the economic depression in addition the members of the county coun cil tried to have the burden of relief costs placed on the dominion and provincial governments so that the expenditures for such services would be divided equally over the whole population of the eldest whitchurch native dead hvc3 mim silas armitage
