west of the french and mattawa rivers only one thousand special elk licenses will be issued from the district offices of the department of lands and forests which are located north of the french and the 1950 eastern arctic patrol which will visit the settlements of j canadas eastern arctic at the 1 various ports of call there are rcmp detachments medical centres government schools trad ing posts weather and radio stations and mission establish ments this years cruise the twenty- eighth expedition will cover 10000 miles it will be the maiden voyage of the c d howe new department of transport vessel the first large j ship built for service in the east- era arctic since the loss of the nascopie in 1917 and the latest of several vessels which have carried the patrol since its inception in 1922 the c d howe sailing in midjuly will call at twentyfour ports in southern canada tabulation of the census will commence in june 1951 but in the arctic the work must be started in january this year the members of the east ern arctic patrol will organize plans for the task which will be- carried out under the immediate direction of the rcmp and which must be completed by ship- time next year j the eastern arctic patrol pre sents a fine example of combined operations by government depart ments mr winters observed six departments of the government of canada are taking part in the effort either by supplying equip ment or by- sending representa tives on duty such as hydrographic surveys aerial photography med ical services and postal services alex stevenson arctic division of the resources and development department who speaks eskimo will be officerincharge of the expedition as senior administra tive officer he will be responsible for government inspections and his duties will include those of a justice of the peace game officer and officer for citizenship matters assisting the administrative chief will be g johnston arctic division his duties will be largely statistical and will have to do with family allowances relief and old age allowances to the eskimos the patrol will be particularly concerned with canadas conserva tion plans in the arctic figures will be collected on kills of whales walrus seals foxes caribou wolves wildlife comprising the eskimo economy mail for delivery in the eastern arctic will be despatched with the patrol the volume of mail handled during the expedition is usually about 500 bags and the ser vice is available to the eskimos who like to communicate with one another in syllabic script the c d howe is equipped with a surgery visited last week at the geo wil son home misses myrna jones erla jones marjoric appleby and ethel coates returned sunday night from a weeks vacation at wasaga beach friends will be glad to know that mrs j gregg was able to leave the oshawa hospital on saturday and is now wth her brother mr irving mcavoy also mrs robt carson came home on sunday from the hospital where she has been for the past three weeks mr and mrs thomas galbraith of toronto spent sunday with theic daughter mrs lloyd wilson mr geo crummer of ninga manitoba called last week on mr and mrs geo wilson and mr and mrs w p jones mr and mrs b jamieson and family and mr vic jamieson visit ed sunday with mr w dearborne and mr and mrs archie briton at oshawa miss marion disney has accepted a position as teacher at one of the oshawa schools mayfair restaurant monday thru friday 8 am 11 pm saturday 8 am 12 pm
