states the battle seems to be won as there was another drop of almost an inch today bringing the level down to an even 30 feet it is re markable what a difference in morale such a small drop in the river level has upon the people they think the worst is over and it now is but a matter of keeping watch and waiting for the river to settle to its natural level my first reaction to the sight of the dikes and the height of the river levels was admiration for the people of winnipeg and district for the tremendous etfort- which must have been put into the con struction of these dikes there were days when almost the whole city was out en masse to slug and sweat but it has paid off and it is a wonder that not more buildings are inundated particular credit has been paid to the teenagers who used their last ounce of youth ful energy to carry heavy sand bags the city takes on an ominous appearance with millions of sand bags piled along the various rivers with the banks of the red being fortified to the height of 1215 feet beautiful lawns in residential areas have huge holes scooped out by bulldozers which push the dirt against the sandbags to strengthen the erected barriers sewers on the streets are either completely locked or have sandbags piled around them for heights varying from one to five feet depending upon the level of the street the destruction in certain areas is alarming to see newly con structed homes in water up to the windows and as high as the doors is a very unnerving sight many homes were given up to the para lyzing rise of the rivers and it seems strange and sad to see a row of sandbags running between build ings with water inundating some and lapping jealously at the dikes in order to get at the ones on the other side of these manmade bar riers in certain areas the bulldozers have scooped tons and tons of earth against rows of houses with dirt being as high as the roof these buildings are of course written off as almost total losses appeared in last weeks paper brings to mind a project dear to the heart of our late reeve mr a v nolan it was his desire to see the memorial park gates rebuilt at main street at his request prices on material and labour were obtained from the maye contractors at goodwood a second skilled bricklayer offered his services at a greatly reduced price volunteer labour was avail able for the demolition of the pil lars and for the digging of the foundation one citizen in fiis eagerness to have the work done was willing to give a cash donation this information was placed be fore the council three members rejected the idea of complete re building in favour of a repair job this repair job like the putting up of street signs as passed by the council two years ago has been shelved nothing has been done about it to date our park is a beauty spot appre ciated by our visitors as well as ourselves that we have allowed the memorial park gates to fall into such a state of disrepair is a disgrace to us all it shows a lack of appreciation of what the men whose names appear on them did for us 1914191s council of 1950 lets get on with the job now yours respectfully john scott councillor 19471919
