blake street had christmas on sunday with their son chas ward and family on obrien ave mr and mrs harry brillinger were christmas visitors in mark- ham with their daughter and son- inlaw mr and mrs john william son one of the biggest house parties held this christmas was the gathering at the home of mr and mrs gar lehman who own and occupy the stouffer farm adjoining town to the north twentyone sat down to christmas dinner at this historic spot so closely assoc iated with the beginning of stouff ville mrs gar lehman says the family gathering all sat down at one time and actually there was room for two or three more had the occasion demanded it among those present were mrs lehmans sisters and brothersinlaw from toronto gars mother and father mr and mrs ab lehman also his sisters and brothers bringing the christmas dinner party to its astounding number mr and mrs h o klinck report a verv merry christmas with mr and mrs m a clark and mrs t w klinck of rr2 peterborough present also were cameron clarjs of the oac and mr and mrs james moore of ottawa while the party was enjoying the christmas turkey a phone call from st louis mo brought greetings from mr and mrs bockner and litue ricky whose childish voice was heard distinctly over the wires mrs bockner is a daughter of mr klinck mr sam armstrong spent christmas at kirkland lake visit ing his son who is school principal in the northern town and a mar ried man with a family rev arthur greer of weston and former stouffville pastor in the christian church here assisted in the funeral service for the late mrs john h procter of new market who died there last week in her 90th year mr and mrs robert johnston spent christmas in trenton mr glenn ratcliff was with his aunt and sister mrs matthews and miss florence ratcliff in brant- ford for the weekend holiday mr and mrs sam irwin accom panied by lleen and eldon dixon spent the holiday in toronto visit ing mr and mrs stanley irwin rev and mrs samuel goudie also mr jos mertens and miss margery spent christmas day with their son and daughter mr and mrs fletcher goudie altona mr and mrs byers beeler of hamilton and mr and mrs spar ling durant of kemptville spent the weekend with mr and mrs ken laushway- visitors with mr and mrs howard st john and his mother mrs w f st john east of town for christmas were mr and mrs jack lawery toronto miss martha ferrier green river miss mary rawson claremont mr al dummer mr and mrs bob raw- son muriel ron and roberta alt of st thomas christmas pie now forgotten mrs jos hoover west end has in her possession a recipe for a christmas pie that she has never tried herself but is not adverse io passing it on to friends who would like to return to the old english custom of making the yule pie instead of the christmas turkey it is to be remembered this pie is intended for the large families of railroad conductor on the cnr out of winnipeg mr r c birkett is in town visiting his brothers tom and will other christmas guests at the william birkett home were mr john birkett and two daughters lleen and electa of port perry mr and mrs h o klinck were in peterborough for christmas with mr and mrs milton clark mrs h lee church st enjoyed the holiday in toronto with her family the waiter lee and locke homes christmas guests at the home of mr and mrs fred reynolds church st were mr and mrs albert reynolds and daughter of toronto and their son don from clinton also mr and mrs chas reynolds and children of picker ing spoffords general store is clos ing tuesday wednesday and thursday jan 2 to 5 inclusive alt day opening again for business on friday morning during the interval some store changes will be made and stocktaking will be done milliard pugh former stouffville boy who happened in town this week won the lovely 15pound turkey given awav at the arena on monday evening to the holder of the lucky program number issued olden days we are indebted to i for tie stouffviuemidland game mrs hoover for loaning us this the big turkey was donated to the old curling rink sold the stouffville curling club have sold their frame building to mr w d atkinson who will paint up and make repairs to fit the place as an implement shed the curling club once very active had dwindled in recent years and last winter the cracking of the scotch granite with the resonant notes of sweep er up was not heard at all weather conditions thi3 winter would have made sure interest was not revived and so a sale was decided on the price received or to be received we understand is 500 which will no doubt be distributed to the share holders who twenty years ago purchased the building from the cnr it had been a freight shed and only a few years ago was reshingled and is generally in good repair the street on which the building stands hadnt a build ing on when the late w h todd donated the ground to the rink company since that time how ever the section or street has developed into a purely residential one and has been named park road since the southern end enters the town park where the new arena is built the curlers have been having the scotch granite down in the new rink on a few occasions this winter recipe which reads in merry england a few cen turies ago ingredients of the christmas pie as it was called con sisted of 2 bushels of flour 20 pounds of butter 4 geese 2 tur keys 2 rabbits 2 woodcocks 6 snipes 4 partridge 7 blackbirds 2 pigeons 2 neats tongues 2 cur lews there is no official record of what happened when such a pie was opened but history does record that the pie was 8 or 9 feet in circumference and was usually taken around in a wheeled cart in order to serve to the family and guests teacher many years at toronto for many years a teacher on the toronto public school staff abigail l irwin died saturday at the home of her niece mrs w p lane toronto at the time of her retire ment a few years ago miss irwin had taught for sometime at earl grey school and previously at davisville school she was born in markham daughter of the late mr and mrs samuel irwin and belonged to one of the oldest families of the district miss irwin was a member of the former west united church where she sang in the choir and the present asbury- west united church she had been a prominent worker in the wa the wms and other church activities surviving is one sister mrs lewis lofgren- of chicago and 14 nieces and nephews hockey club butcher by harvey schell mr grenville forsyth of chicago is making his home in town for an indefinite time with mr and mrs clayton stouffer obrien avenue mr forsyth was not enjoying good health and his brother levi forsyth went to chicago to visit bringing gren ville back with him after a stay in chicago of five weeks an old stouffville boy grenville forsyth will not find it too hard to settle down to life as we live it here his wife died two years ago and he had no close ties to hold him in chicago that christmas gathering at the home of mr and mrs walter pipher albert street must have taxed even their spacious rooms because there were 30 present for the dinner besides mr and mrs pipher and son murray were noted their daughter and son-in- law and grandson mr and mrs murray daniels and master robert mr and mrs george gower mr and mrs fred steck- ley shirley and harold mr and mrs ed brownsberger hazel and bruce mr and mrs aimer fock- ler mr and mrs dean fockler and diana mr and mrs gordon holden erla and billy mr and mrs herb yakeley and richard mr john gower and miss ada grove miss elsie johnson has rented her home on charles street to mr and mrs cliff barkey who are about to locate in town after an absence of some time miss john son intends to spend the winter in toronto where she has a sister living the johnson claremont postoffice store brougham and woods drug store markharu mrs jim brown former annie paul who has been a patient in toronto hospital for ten days returned to her home here during christmas week and is being cared forjy mr and mrs william brown who occupy part of the brown home on stouffer street christmas guests at the home of mr and mrs chas mackeehine of 22 strathgowan cres toronto were mrs mackeehines parents mr and mrs e r good audrey lois and garth stouffville mr and mrs edward r good paul and david and harold r good all of waterloo mr and mrs gordon hall james and betty of kitch ener and miss ruby e good rn of toronto a gratifying mite box collection was received at the december meeting of the garrett evening auxiliary of the united church held at the home of the president mrs j m storey miss kathleen webster who was in charge of the devotional period gave a very impressive christmas story the theme the first christmas bell and was assisted by mrs garfield kellington singing a solo miss jane burkett read the scripture carols were sung and a poem was read by mrs t b rae the fourth chapter of the study book grow ing with the years was reviewed by miss gertrude todd the theme in health and healing stressing the great work that had been accomplished in china through dr kenneth j beetons guidance miss ann lehman played a piano number a report of the temper ance rally held in massey hall recently was given by mrs ross winterstein telling of some encour aging results made possible through the efforts of the temper anceworkers also some alarm ing facts where children are left to suffer through neglect of the parents mrs allan mcconnochie sang a solo accompanied by miss ann lehman at the piano followed by a reading given by mrs ray fleury that contributed to the enjoyable program the vice- president miss eva hoover pre sided and the meeting closed with prayer by rev d davis lunch was served and a social time enjoyed the new year to all- our friends 1900 1950 back in 1900 a representative of the v d mathews co a grain company of toronto dropped into c h stivers general store in unionville and asked the prop rietor if he knew of anyone who would run the companys elevator at unionville for the coming season mr stiver said he had a young brother on the farm north of unionville who wasnt very busy after har vest and suggested that the grain man see him after a short consultation it was agreed that mr p l stiver would buy for the w o mathews co and c h stiver would keep the books for him and so the partnership of stiver bros was started successful operation at unionville led to the mathews co asking them to take over the operation of their elevators in stouffville aurora and richmond hill mr f l stiver was in charge at stouffville while his brotherinlaw mr joseph watts operated the aurora elevator and mr jacob ramer the richmond hill elevator mr c h stiver continued to operate the union ville elevator and kept the books for all of them this arrangement continued until 1915 when the mathews co wished to dis pose of their elevators at the four points the young firm was able to finance the pur chase of businesses at unionville stouff ville and aurora richmond hill was sold to mr ramer in the meantime coal seeds and commercial feeds had been added to the original grain buying venture after the first world war when specialized feed ing introduced poultry rations dairy feed and balanced hog rations these new feeds were enthusiastically taken up by stiver bros in 1934 the mill was built at union ville and in 1945 the burkholder mill was purchased in stouffville and a new mill erected adjoining the grain elevator the years roll by and time has taken its toll mr c h stiver died in 1917 and his widow carried on at unionville until e j stiver and m e watts returned from overseas in 1919 mr joseph watts died in 1940 and the management at aurora was taken over by mr m mcdowell who had moved there from unionville in 1930 shortly afterwards mr howard stiver join ed the firm at unionville and mr fred mcnalr at stouffville after nearly fifty years in active business lite mr p l stiver died in 1948 jby his wise provision the firm was able to continue in uninter rupted operation the present partners e j stiver m b watts and managers howard stiver milford mcdowell and fred mcnair ace proud of thestdrdy reputation for integ rity and service which the founders of the firm early acquired in the communities in which they served they are appreciative of the loyal support glventhem by the present staff but above all are they appre ciative of the loyalty and friendship of their many customers many of them are custom ers of long standing whose continued pat ronage and goodwill has
