evening a large gathering of neighbors and friends met at the home of mr and mrs jake wideman to shower gifts on mr and mrs harvey wideman nee eunice yake we extend best wishes to this couple whitchurch lady tells of talks with ghandi mrs francis starr who with her husband spent much time in india addressed the home and school club at newmarket and revealed some interesting first hand information about ghandi which was received with profound interest by her listeners mrs starr was sent to india by the quaker relief agency abroad and there worked with refugees her talk glimpses of ghandi described some of the situations which arose during her brief stay at birla house where she was nursing a member of the friends unit suffering with typhoid fever having attended the daily prayer service led by ghandi with mem bers of his immediate household and having accompanied him on many of his daily walks in the garden mrs starr was able to paint a vivid and interesting pic ture of the man ghandi the silent concentration on her remarks was visual proof of audience interest mrs c a curtis thanked the speaker on behalf of the organiza tion this is the second time that mrs starr has addressed the new market home and school associa tion greenwood there will be no sunday school or church service this coming sun day owing to the anniversary ser vices in the morning and evening in the kinsale church mr and mrs lawson parks of oshawa visited last sunday with her parents mr and mrs p clarke the evening wa met at the home of mrs frank webb on wed nesday night mr and mrs l ham of oshawa were visitors with john and mrs middleton recently we are sorry to rep that mr james brooks is not as well as his many friends would wish the farm forum met at the home of mr and mrs monkman last monday night mr and mrs george pegg of whitevale spent sunday afternoon at the milton pegg home the wms met last thursday afternoon at mrs m peggs with a good attendance mrs r hoskin had charge of the study chapter former pastor returned gormley church anniversary last sunday marked another anniversary occasion in the united missionary church gormley large crowds were in attendance at each service and throughout the day many old acquaintances were renewed the pastor rev l k sider was in charge of each service mrs g wishart of toronto gave stirring messages in both the morning and evening services rev and mrs huson were guest speakers of the afternoon and were enjoyed by all mr and mrs g j bolender and mark who returned from nigeria west africa only last tuesday were present at suddenly e bertwin blackburn reeve of scott township died at his home suddenly on sunday following a heart attack he was 63 a graduate of ontario agricul tural college guelph mr black burn was widely known as a breeder of prize aberdeen angus cattle which he displayed at cattle shows in many parts of the united states and canada he was one of the district heading farmers and had served for some time on the township council he is survived by his widow jennie bowman four daughters mrs iva angus of ottawa enid of oshawa general hospital elaine of the ottawa civic hospital and jean at home also surviving are two sons james at home and har vey of scott township the funeral attended by many of the county council and county officials was held at the family residence lot 5 concession 5 scott
