just barren land there even unfit for pasture the uxbridge forest is an employer of labor and has a bene ficial effect on the township as a whole at its june session council considered the subject so impor tant that it adjourned for half a day to inspect the forest in com pany with government experts some goes to mill some of the current lumber crop is being processed in the uxbridge mill a lot of thinning lias been done recently and produc tion of pulp wood has paid the county dividends ontario as a whole is just begin ning to profit from its municipal forests while the program goes on apace with more and more counties joining in several municipal plan tations are now approaching 25 years of age and require thinning out to achieve a better develop ment of stands several hundred cords of officials counties made land purchases totalling more than 6000 acres and about zvt million trees were plant ed on municipal and authority forests in the fiscal year ending march 19 is under the municipal forest act counties are given the option of paying merely the net cost of their municipal forest at the end of the period of agreement 30 to 50 years or of selling the land at cost price to the province supervision work is done by the zone forester two more forests two of the most recent county forests were officially opened in the united counties of stormont and dundas eastern ontario acutally discussed in council 20 years ago but let drop until 1947 when attention was focussed on the retreat of the wooded area by zone foresters the ontario conservation and reforesta tion association and other groups and officials interested in forestry assessment figures showed that 20 of the land was classed as slash swamp and waste in 1918 reeve fred h broder of morrisburg was appointed war den of the united counties and he decided to take immediate action a strong committee was appointed to investigate the problem and owners of waste land were inter viewed in prospects of putting waste land to work producing trees advertisements inserted in ail newspapers requesting offers of suitable land brought a flood of replies land was offered at prices ranging from 25c cents per
