recently applied to the canadian federation of agricul ture at ottawa for a clarification of the excess profits tax as it applies to farmers and since it does not oprrate until a profit of 5000 clear of all expenses is made we do not believe that any farmer in the local district has anything to worry about so clarified report a good time swe join with your other corres pondents and friends in price ounds like o surethingjjargain buf howmany of us realize that in canada fi were getting dollars at less than half the price of other gears at a fraction theprice in many other countries to day heres what we mean a dollar- is worth as much g as it will buy and today your dollar buys atleasttwice as much as it did in the last war g for instance your buys a bar of jlggin those daysto day you can buy the same quality that set you back pihen truly your dollar is half 9 price since if buys twice as much price ceilings and other antiinflationary measures have kept its value high and you protect your dollars worth every time you buy a bondpayoffadebtrefusetohoardqoods orfrequentblackmarkef5 thats howto make dollars count more farmers who cannot grasp the whole meaning should clip the item for future reference any farmer whose profits during the year on all his farm operations after deducting the proper allow ances for expenses etc amount to more than 55000 is subject to an ex cess profits tax however there are certain quali fications such a farmer is entitled in calculating his tax to deduct from his total profits a salary allow ance for himself of not less than 2500 and not more than 5000 that is if he is a farmer who works full time on his farm the exact amount he will be permitted to deduct as between the minimum and the maximum is left to the discretion of the minister of national reven ue who is guided generally by the recommendation of the local inspec tors of income tax in the case of a farm run on a partnership basis the partnership is taxable if its profits are more than 5000 before any salary or wage deductions for the partners are made however in estimating their tax the partners are permit ted to deduct a salary allowance for each of them according to what the minister deems proper calculating the tav when a jarmer comes to figure out excess profits tax on his 1943 farm operations he must estimate what his total profits were in that year after allowing for the regular statutory deductions for expenses etc but before allowing any deduc tion of salary for himself if those total profits are over and above 5000 before a salary deduction is made then he is subject to an ex cess profits tax he then proceeds to figure the amount of tax he has to pay in doing so he has to make two calculations because he must pay whichever is the larger of two amounts namely either 15 of the balance of his profits after deducting his salary allowance or 100 of the excess of his pro fits over his standard profits af ter deducting his salary allowance in the case of the second calcula tion excess profits means the amount over and above what the income tax department calls his standard profits which is merely a measuring standard made up on the basis of his average yearly pro fits in the years 1936 to 1939 inclu sive in any case his standard pro fit is deemed to be a minimum of 5000 so that if a farmer has no re- ord of profits in the years 1936 to 1939 he can use the minimum of 5800 standard profits as his aver age for those years and calculate on that basis recovered the funeral was held on monday to mount pleasant ceme tery
