now jim thomas me ijmision 35c rhcrosbyrsecy cars 35c r s ward treasurer children free ob hbftey president ssjjiaw august 26 1942 dear mr lrfchorish and comrades again the convoy got through and your gift of ctgarettes received please accept my heartfelt thanks the usual acknowledgement card with its limited space is much too small to say all the things t would like to as i do wish you all to know how much i appreciate your remembrance i waslalsopleased toget the july 2nd edition of the tribune the news from home is always so wel come and seeing names and places and people i know brings hack pleasant memories of my boyhood days around hingwbod and dick sons hill and the daily trip to markham high school and also stouffville continuation school no matter how far i roam that dis trict will always be home the tribunes full page fsalute to the army and your tribute to the men from the area now serv ing was indeed commendable and all those whoso names appear like me proud of their home town and of the veterans who are taking such an interest in this new generation of soldiers who are now carrying the torch and must carry on until this affair is over my work takes me around a lot and i see the canadian corps in all its intensive training and if i am any judge you have a fine army over here the canadian is outr standing in a country that has so many races in uniform he seems to be conspicuous as he is usually well dressed and seems to take pride in his personal appearance and deport ment they do get their names in the scandal sheets at times and thoir whoopee at times arouses the very reserved and stolid english man but- generally speaking they are very well behaved they make lots of friends and are well liked especially in- the areas away from the permanent camps the military towns are out to make what they soldiers land they do say that the only thing that is holding it up is can as theydid in the last war and always tadd a few pennies to the price of anything when they see the canada shoulder fia3hfo they sure gave a good accountof them selves at dieppe and indications point tohhe vud n i day but it can not come too soon to suit everyone for we have been hanging around so long that this training is getting monotonous and the soldier rather resents so much repetition in training i am one of the few old soldiers left over here as many have re turned and i suppose it is only a matter of time before old age or the doctor catches up with me i am fairly fit yet but no- doubt this is a young mans game and no picnic for an old timer like me this may serve as a warning to any of you old sweats who have itcbjnjr feet this little isle is just packed with the barrage balloons i spent a recent leave in the mid lands and visited a hospital in which i spent several months in 1916 i was able to contact several of the- old staff who are still on tlio job after 26 years and they went out of their way to make my visit enjoyable this f green isle of england is very beautiful just now with the heather in bloom the harvest is in full swing and many of our men spend their spare time in the fields with the rarmprs and also picking hops hope i have not bored
