this church the township of pickering like the rest of the province was very sparsely settled and the land for the most part was still covered with virgin forest there were no railways till thirty years later the city of torcinto was in corporated in 1834 thirteen years after the founding of the claremont church it was known as the first baptist church of christ in pickering the first membership consisted of pei sons expelled from the church in markham for heresy dis orderly walk etc there were twenty charter members for the first years of existence meetings were held everywhere from the 7th of pickering to the 9th of whitchurch but in 1850 the church purchased a piece of land from joseph wixon on the 9th of pickering and on it erect ed a plank house 28x34 this building was replaced by one of stone in 1864 and in 1866 it was completed on the present site and across the road a fine brick manse erected exclusive of temporary supplies the clare mont congregation has had 22 ministers in the 118 years of its existence the first incumbency was the longest of all that of elder wixon who served for 29 years the next in length was theophilus booker who remain ed for nearly ten years alex white for eight years and h wood and a grant for six years each of the 20 members that composed the church at its organization 12 were men and 8 were women it is interesting to note
