career is of particular interest mrs r w mcclung popu larly known as nellie mcclung though almost the whole of her life has been spent in western canada is really a daughter of ontario her maiden name was nellie letitia mooney and her birthplace was in or near the village of chatsworth in grey county in the year 1880 while she was still a child the family moved out to manitoba those were early days in the settle ment of our western provinces and travelling facilities were very primitive mr mooney took up a farm in the souris valley as far as st boniface he took the train then followed one hundred and eighty miles of toilsome journey by oxteam and waggon to reach his desti nation for several years care free life was lived on the open flowerstrewn prairie where the child learned to love the open spaces when arrived at the age of ten opportunity open ed to take up schooling ad vance was rapid in three years nellie had passed the examina tion for a secondclass teachers certificate at fifteen she enter ed the normal school and for three years following gradua tion she taught school in the village of hazel three miles from manitou in 1892 she at tended the winnipeg collegiate institute there securing a first class teachers certificate and taught school until 1896 when she was united in marriage with mr r w mcclung a business man of manitou and it was while living there that her life of authorship began the issue of the happy marriage was the birth of four children three boys and a girl to her children she was passionately devoted the crowning joy of life she declares is motherhood mrs mcclung has confessed that for her the road to success was not reached without many failures the desire to write stories came early but the young aspirant had to face re jection after rejection of her literary efforts the door swung wide open with the publication of her delightful story of western life sowing seeds in danny it had its genesis in a short story of that name but when this was shown to a tor onto publisher she was urged to extend it into a book this she did and success was instant growing sales tempted a second effort and the second chance followed and her fame was established and other stories succeeded but magic in the use of her pen is not the only possession of this gifted woman as a plat form speaker she has attained almost equal celebrity the same gifts of originality and humor and reasoned bandlingi of facts mark her efforts in this line her strong social instincts have led her into taking up one cause after another one of the first of these was that of woman suffrage here she did noble pioneering work and pav ed the way for political equal ity of the sexes a striking inci dent in her career at this time was an interview she had with premier roblin of manitoba approaching him to plead her cause she met with a cold re ception and was plainly told that her duty lay in another direction indignantly and with warmth she told roblin that after this insult to her sex he should feelthe steel of active opposition from the women of the province and he did for he was swept out of power at the next election a potent factor in the campaign was a play by mrs mcclung in which the premier was held up to laugh able ridicule this brought fill ed houses in winnipeg and the surrounding towns evidently mrs mcclung had a flare for politics she for a time held a seat in the alberta legislature in church affairs mrs mcclung has also taken a prom inent part when the great ecumenical conference of world wide methodism was lesson for march 5 peter preaches to the gentiles golden text look unto me and be ye saved all the ends of the earth for i am god and there is none else isa 4522 the lesson as a whole we have seen that our lord committed the keys of the king dom of heaven to peter matt 1619 it is ignorance and superstition that makes him the custodian of the keys to heav en itself there is no such thought in scripture the king dom of heaven is the sphere of the divine authority exercised governmentally here on earth in other words it is what we speak of as christendom liter ally christs kingdom in this kingdom there are the true and the false genuine be lievers and mere professors the church is not the kingdom but it is in the kingdom at pentecost peter was the chosen one to open the doors into this sphere to israel in samaria he ratified with john the work begun by philip now in the present lesson we see him open ing the door of faith to the gentiles acts 1427 it was paul who was to be gods special servant to the nations but his ministry did not begin till the keys had been used by peter though the lord had ex plained his plan during the forty days between his resur rection and ascension it took a specific vision to give peter the needed courage and decision to undertake this work the historical setting some seven years had elapsed since the samaritan visitation of which we read last week and still the disciples had not begun to carry out the last part of the lords instruction as to carry ing the gospel to the uttermost parts of the earth but in about the year ad 41 the work of converting the gentiles was launched through special circumstances being brought to bear upon peter verse by verse acts 1030 i prayed in my house cornelius was an up right gentile honestly seeking the way of righteousness whose prayer to god for light was not allowed to go unanswered see rom 2 610 verse 31 thy prayer is heard thine alms are had in remembrance cornelius showed by his earnestness in prayer and his devotion to righteousness that he was earn estly seeking after god he may have been a quickened soul but he did not have any assurance of salvation verse 32 call hither simon whose surname is peter this meant the sending of a messen ger a distance of between thirty and forty miles from caesarea down the coast to joppa the seaport of judea there peter was staying in the home of simon a tanner this in itself was significant as no rigid jew would have been found in such a place god was preparing the messenger for special service verse 33 we are all here present before god peter had responded the lord having spoken to him in a vision see vs 916 and when he with several christian companions reached caesarea he found cornelius and a number of like- minded friends all waiting ex pectantly for his message verse 34 god is no respec ter of persons at last peter realized that the middle wall was broken down and the grace of god could not longer be con fined to jewish boundaries but must go out to all honest seek ing souls everywhere verse 35 in every nation wherever men truly turn to god and cry to him for light he will give it if by their changed lives they manifest their fear of the lord and repentance from their sins he makes himself re sponsible to give them light enough to be saved verse 36 preaching peace by jesus christ all blessing for men is wrapped up in christ he is gods remedy for all the troubles that sin has brought in coruelius had heard of him but he did not know that his mercy was as free for the gentile as the jew peter insists that he is lord of all verse 37 that word ye know cornelius had heard of the life and teaching of jesus following upon the baptism of john for this was a matter of common knowledge in pale stine and vicinity verse 38 god anointed jesus of nazareth the mighty works attesting the messiah- ship of jesus were wrought in the power of the holy spirithis mission was to undo the works of the devil verse 39 we are witness es peter and his companions had heard and seen the lord in his life they had also wit nessed his death upon the cross verse 40 him god raised up moreover they knew that he who died had been raised again the third day by god the father verse 41 who did eat and drink with him this was after his resurrection and is cited as proof that there was no ocular illusion or mere subconscious idea that he who had died was raised again verse 42 he commanded us to preach this is the rea son for worldwide missions these are our marching orders we are to proclaim christ everywhere as saviour and fu ture judge verse 43 whosoever be lieveth in him here is the grand proclamation of im mediate forgiveness for all who put their trust in the one whose coming all the prophets had foreseen the message is for all men everywhere verse 44 the holy ghost fell peter preached these gentiles believed the holy business directory medical dr s s ball physician and surgeon xray office cor obrien and main phone 196
