two others with whom he was tied township council had a hectic few they are evelyn paisley daughter intimites on saturday when they of mr and mrs harry paisley j were called upon to strike the tax to break the for 1936 aud discovered that the rate pointed upward over three mills for general township purposes alone the county rate is up a quarter mill also while relief a quarter mill is a separate assess ment this year iii accordauce with instructions from the dept of municipal affairs whereas hereto fore it was included in the general township rate councillors said it would not make good reading but try as they did no way out was devised to escape the apparent sharp increase abso lute honesty maintained in determ ining to give the ratepayers the facts it was decided to get right on two matters heretofore allowed to sort of slide for instance some years ago there was borrowed from the clergy resoive5015 which was never replaced auditor roy andrews recommended that this should be refunded over a period of years thus in the general late there is provided 502 as first payment likewise a few years ago four it was said the council did not pay the total school levy raised handing over only 60 per cent before the end of the year and retaining the i 40 per cent until the beginning of the next year this improved the general statement for that year and ever since it has been necessary to issue the 40 per cent cheque early in the year as balance of the past years levy and again in the fall a 60 per cent cheque to each school on the current levy this the council intend to correct accordingly will raise 505 as a beginning to refund the total over a period of ten years these two items account for a levy of fourtenths or less than half a mill in the general rate reeve rao called attention to these matters but said the real reason for the increased taxation was that the township had carried 3000 in assets last year which proved to be false and were written off thats not all the reason for the increase and anyway you were a member of last years council observed deputy reeve toole mr rae held that had council known the assets were no good they would not have counted on them when they struck the rate last year roy andrew auditor said council overspent last year chiefly on roads several thousands including the writeoff of the false assets a new hall was built and paid for without increased taxation in 1335 the new rate he believed would put them on sound footing provided expenditures were kept within this years estimates the increased tax is largely due to even break for teams in opening playoff runs errs 9 8 13 9 in stouffville on wednsday last stouffvile took sutton into camp in the first playoff game in the northern town by the score of 139 doug bradd on they were shooting to the high heavens it was feared fires would bo started in the locality it tho flames wore not subdued when tho trouble was over there was nothing left of the truck excepting the chassis every tire was completely burned up and these provided most of the spectacular blaze men watched the dying ombers until late in the night seeds vary in quality the local grain market is starling slowly to move although little grain or seed is offered as yet alsike sold this week realized around 6 to 7 a bushel and barley is quoted at 55c bus there u a wide range in the quality of alsike some samples not bringing a bid at even half the market price the drought or heat discolored somo seed badly and mado it almost un fit to market excepting as very in ferior grade increased road expenditures in 1935 13083 was expended under this heading and in 1936 there will bo spent close to 17000 in addition to the various school levies the following general rates were struck and named in the by law for county purposes a rate oli 975 to raise 2358473 for high school levy 175 to raise 432116 and for general rate 950 to raise 23457 76 to raise s00 for twp share of relief a quarter mill will show on the tax bills the new rates will increase the taxes on a 5000 assessment by approximately 20 councillor evans said that he had no wish to blame past councils but he felt that rates had been struck too low over the years and now it had come to a climax other business light muttoneating dogs have played havoc in the central part of the township and it was discussed as to j the bylaw for the year was given lengthy consideration by the council at the regular meeting held at the township hall aftornoon session and was given its fust and second reading while its third reading was withheld pending re ceipt of some school section requisi tions and further consideration of some particular items in the esti mates an increase in markham taxes this year looms up as a strong possibility tho county rate is in creased from 111 mills to 1143 and the general school rate from 243 to 26 mills and there is a possibility that tho township rate may jump from 40 mills to 45 definite set ting of the various rates await the consideration on the third reading of the bylaw the assessment of the township shows a slight increase this year the total 1936 assessment being 34- proposition outlined in this paper last week to build a tarvia top on the road around musselmans lake alone the lines set out in thearticle and agreed to by the members of the lake musselmans ratepayers association in fact president wm evans brought the matter to the attention of the tribune and re quested us to set out the proposal in typo as we did the distance from ballantrao to tho south shore of lake musselman around the lake and north to the first sideroad and oack to ballantrae is slightly over four miles if the road could be built with the rate payers bearing a certain cost the municipality a set amount the county and ontario government a gocdly proportion tho proposal ought to lie advanced rapidly if the proper so called spade work is done this fall by way of contacting tho proper parties it is still possible that this road could he surfaced next year and the cost to the farmers of whitchurch would be no more than they are paying now for mainten ance tho ratepayers association should have met tho council last saturday when in session but there is still time to do so in september although many of tho cottagers return to their city homes before this meeting comes off i links with the early pioneer the trouble with vacation tours on auto train or ship one always needs another week to rest up from tho trip there is no especial news in the fact that four or five accidental and we never re call just such an interesting group casually assembling in such a simple manner friends or more than half a century they represent the sur viving link that binds the present
