farmers there has been muoh criticism from farmers at tho decision of the hep burn government to stop all farm loans but no other course was open at the time it must bo re membered that the former govern ment operated the farm loans board as a sort of political agency and millions of dollars were loaned unwisely when the liberals came into otllce they found chaos they bad to set to work and rebuild the entire system and place it on a busi ness basis just when the reorganization was progressing nicely along camo the dpminion government with its farm creditors act which certain ly did not help the provincial situa tion it was first decided by the ontario cabinet to cease operations and merge the system with tho dominion board but differences arose and when it was evident that the dominion authorities were not going to cooperate with ontario the local board was continued and loans were made then came the battle with the financial interests faced with a crisis of great magnitude the hep burn government was forced to conserve all its resources and shako off the attempt to dominate the pro vince by the big interests on the outs with the banks the govern ment was compelled to stop the farm loans but the farm loans board is still in existence supervis ing the collection of monies from debtors when the right time comes and it may not be far dis tant the loans will be resumed on the same businesslike basis that marked the work of tho new board after the government took hold of affairs twin sisters active at 85 always together mrs bowers and mrs hodgson may be the oldest river in bickering township they went to school and lived together until they married marriage meant that they no longer lived in the same home but during all their lifetime they have remained within a short distance of one another and today the twins mrs george bowers and mrs h hodgson are residents of stouffvllle says the toronto star were the oldest twins in york county and perhaps in the prov ince imrs bowers said i mean that we are the oldest born in ontario both are in good health and tako an active interest in life mrs bowers and her husband will cele brate their diamond wedding anni versary next winter on january is mrs hodgson was widowed 12 years ago but keeps houso for her self on churoh street tho sisters see one another almost every day weve never lived more than four miles apart mrs bowers said and we came to stouftvillo about the same time weve done every thing together all our lives we joined the church when we were 17 at whitevale and now for 9 years in stouffviue we have attended the united church together we used to look so much alike that even father and mother couldnt tell us apart if our backs were turned mrs hodgson said we were alike in many ways mother always kept us dressed alike because we wanted it that way our natures were much alike too the sisters are the daughters of the late mr and mrs james middle- ton who were pioneers in the pick ering district their father and mother came from england with their families when the father was 19 and the mother 11 they came on the same sailing vessel and the passage took 6 weeks later they were married and moved into what was then the bush on the 7th con cession in pickering where the twin girls were born father was one of five brothers who came from england mrs bowers explained when he first came to canada there were only a few houses in toronto then muddy york there was a hotel the others dwellings but all were built of logs father became inter ested in politics and did a great amount of work for sir john a macdonald like all twins mrs hodgson and i have looked very much alike and just the other day one of tho papers mixed us up calling her rachel and me matilda imrs bowers declared people often made mistakes aud we used to play jokes on the young men we would go to church with one and come home with a different one and neither would know the difference our husbands could al ways tell us apart when they were courting us were quite a bit alike in dis position for we both like fun and botli have been very active mrs bowers said there didnt seem much difference in tho way we studied at school for we were both in th same class all the way through the teacher had a great time tell ing us apart before he was certain sometimes he had to look for a scar on my wrist where my brother had let a hay knife fall weve both liv ed quiet but busy lives there were ten in our family four sons and six daughters but we two are the only survivors mrs bowers feels that a great change has come over the world and that it has not been an im provement 1 dont think id like to be young today she said everyone is looking for pleasure but when we were young we were just as happy and contented lots of young people today have been married and have absolutely noth ing ahead of them mrs bowers has one great hobby crochet work but mrs hodgson considers that keeping house all alone at her age is a line hobby neither of us ever smoked and we wero both strong for temper ance mrs hodgson said i think its ridiculous for women to smoke mrs hodgson can remember only one quarrel with her sister and it was many years ago when they were girlswe were papering the sitting room and we couldnt get the paper on straight so each one blamed the other she said it will be liard when the final separation comes but it will come and we must face it as cheerfully as we can mrs hodgson remark ed guitar rixgwoob booze parties in cars end in court the w h shaw store phone 9113 stoukrllla
