life and property by fire while fire fighting must be their primary job the most alert of these departments consider that their full measure of service to citizens re quires as much attention to prevent ing fires as to putting them out intelligently made inspections are the backbone of effective fire pre vention work the average business man and property owner is not trained to recognize fire hazards and does not have the knowledge of fire fighting and tho factors influencing the spread of fire as does the ex perienced fireman the purpose of inspections may be outlined as follows 1 hazards persons who work among materials and situa tions which are hazardoits often be come negligent of their own safety just as long periods without a fire produce overconfidence and an underestimate of the fire danger firemen are able to more accurate ly judge the hazard and can point out and explain the conditions which need to be corrected 2- fire equipment under normal conditions fire extinguishers and other fire protection equipment do not get frequent use routine in spections are necessary to make sure that they are in working order when the need arises safety to lite of the occupants ot a building may depend upon the effectiveness of the fire protection equipment maintenance of klro exits as the first duty of firemen oi arriving at a fire is to assist people to escape from the building if necessary exit facilities are a vital concern to the fire department as well as to the occupants of the building an exit which is satis factory for ordinary use may be of littlo or no value under firo con ditions conditions in buildings maximum efficiency in tho hand ling of fire fighting equipment re quires a detailed knowledge of the building in which a firo is being fought knowledge of its fire haz ards its fire protection equipment its structural features affecting the spread of fire and its exit facilities is necessary for the safety ot the firemen as well as for eflicient handling of tho firo to eliminate unnecessary loss of life and property in tho near future a group of fire men may call on all business places to gain knowlcdgo of conditions may wo have your cooperation in
