telephone dispute which may develop into a first- ranking business war the stouffvillebethesda tele phone co of stouffville and the home telephone co ltd of markham have been pretty cool with each other for some time the ontario municipal board was told the other week they have been to say the least barely on speaking terms the rival companies took their problem to the board and were given until february 11 to come to an agreement members of the board would not indicate the course that would be taken if the rivals failed to settle their dispute it was learned there was more than an even chance that in event of failure the board would name claremont an open district for telephone companies and let them fight it out for the 37 odd subscrib ers in the place claremont borderline police village between the main areas serv ed by the rival companies was serv ed in peace by the two companies for some 25 years through the one switchboard operated by the stouff ville firm about two years ago the records revealed relations became strained and under order of th municipal board the home company was authorized to establish a centra office under certain restrictions as to service which in its application to the board the stouffville company claimed had been broken by its rival they claimed among other things that the home company contrary to the order had taken two of its subscribers they asked the board to order the home co to remove its telephones mansion house marks 60 years on station site gel yor share of the snaps at geo saunders clearing out salev full de tails on page s g this locality have been almost com pletely paralized by the flu one wonders it it wouldnt be in the best interests of the public at large if such meetings be cancelled during a period such as we are passing through certainly if each ease were isolated the danger of spreading the disease would be greatly lessoned wouldnt it bo a good thing if a series of articles relative to the subject be written by one of our local doctors the other day we came across a copy of a toronto evening star published in the year 1s9s 37 years ago which made reference to several establishments then thriving in the village of stouffville the mansion house which still stands on main street near the depot was given an historical sett ing although the business done there today is not even a skeleton of that transacted in the olden days the hotel still stands as a memento of the good old days mrs miller widow of the late frank miller almost lives a private life in the big building and while she still hangs out the shingle for boarders and travellers they are few who respond in these days ol motbr travel and keen opposition from other eating and sleeping places in stouffville and the sur rounding towns the article written 37 years ago will be read with interest by our old timers it says for twentythree years has the mansion house graced the corner of main street next the railroad de pot and for twentythree years have the millers father and son wel comed their guests these guests are men whose homes are on the road or whose business calls them away for shorter or longer periods it has always been the millers policy to make their house as much home as possible the house was built about 23 years ago by mr elijah miller and five years later it was consumed by fire losing all they had in the con flagration mr miller nothing daunted rebuilt and the fine house stands a monument to his pluck mr miller the elder is dead these eleven years and the responsibility of management fell on the shoulders of his son frank d miller who is known to the traveling public and his friends in general as a genial host and a good fellow the house stands on main street near the railway depot in an emerald setting of greensward which is dotted with shade trees and beautiful flowering baskets its spacious dimensions of three stories will accommodate nearly one hun dred guests it is heated by hot air tind water lighted by electricity and electric bells are all through the house the sanitation is good and every convenience for the comfort of guests this hotel has the cuisine is above the ordinary and many people make this their home mr miller with the help of his charming wife is the proprietor of one of the best hotels of the firs grade north of toronto death terminates long illness steadily declined although she put up a valiant fight to resist the devasting ravages of rheumatism this coupled with the devoted care lavished on her by her step daughter miss gertrude prevented her from becoming entirely confined to her bed so long as she was able to appear down stairs in her home mrs todd delighted to be in the society of her friends and it can be justly said of her that she serious messrs john ratcliff and k g tarr cemetery commissioners with the cemetery caretaker ernie strong asked council to advise them as to how to bring those plot hold ers to timo who having bought plots at very low rates years ago now refuse to contribute the upkeep fund to the extent of only one dollar per year councillor watts said it was a dead issue so far as they were concerned that the com mission was elected by the people and had all the powers to go ahead and force payment that the council might have reeve sanders said he would look into the law in the matter and if he could get any advice that would help the com mission to collect this money be would obtain it it seems that a large number of plot holders have had their sacred plot cared for year in and year out but refuse to pay the small charge of a dollar tax collector lud lownsborough was given an extension of 30 days in which to return the 1934 tax roll uncollected taxes for last year are 2617 and a big effort will be made to obtain a large part of this before the roll is returned the question of purchasing a new fire truck was up for discussion but nothing definite was arrived at the ford and chevrolet agents have both submitted offers for the old truck in event of the purchase of a new truck dr h b freel gave the council the true situation prevailing- at the continuation school claiming that the institution is badly overcrowd ed and the staff seriously handi capped as a result he believed the only solution was an extension to the building but this he did not advocate at the present time he wanted the council to know that the school board was abreast of the situation and was leaving nothing undone to meet the situation with the churches ringwood stouffviiilie presbytkriam rev w h fuller ra sunday
